Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 58: Whispers of Comfort
For a while, Delphinia thought Ashton had fallen asleep. His tiny body was still under the blanket. She rested on her side, her head sinking into the plush pillow, staring at the ceiling.
Her thoughts wandered, replaying the events of the day—the kiss, the overwhelming emotions, the courage it took to knock on Ashton’s door. It was quiet, and for a moment, the world felt peaceful.
Then, Ashton’s small voice broke the silence.
"Thank you," he whispered. His words were muffled, the sound coming from under the blanket as he pulled it up to cover his face.
Delphinia turned her head to look at him, her brows furrowing slightly in concern. "Thank you? For what?" she asked gently, her voice soft so as not to startle him.
The blanket shifted slightly as Ashton adjusted underneath it. "For letting me have a mom," he murmured. His words were soft, but they hit Delphinia like a ton of bricks.
Before she could respond, Ashton continued, his words trembling as though they had been held back for a long time. "Did you know..." He paused, the blanket moving as he fidgeted nervously. "My real mom didn’t like me."
Delphinia’s heart dropped. She pushed herself up a little, resting on one elbow. "What?" she breathed, her voice a mix of disbelief and sorrow.
Ashton’s voice cracked as he spoke again. "She said..." He hesitated, his words faltering before he pushed them out. "She said that I ruined her life."
The gasp escaped Delphinia before she could stop it. Her hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock. What kind of mother would say something like that to her own child? she thought. Her heart ached for Ashton, and anger simmered within her.
"That’s not right," Delphinia said firmly, her voice trembling with emotion. "No mother should ever say that to her child. That’s..." She trailed off, shaking her head as if the words were too awful to say.
Ashton didn’t respond. The blanket stayed pulled over his head, and his small body seemed to curl into itself, as though he was trying to disappear.
Delphinia reached out but hesitated, unsure if her touch would comfort or overwhelm him. A quick throat clear helped her steady her words. "I... I don’t have a mother, either," she admitted quietly.
The blanket shifted slightly, and she wondered if Ashton was listening. Taking a deep breath, she continued, her voice softer now. "She passed away when I was born. I never got to meet her. I don’t even have memories of her, but..." Her voice wavered, and she had to pause to gather herself. "It still hurts. It always hurts when I think about her."
Ashton slowly lowered the blanket, revealing his tear-streaked face. His big eyes were red and puffy, his cheeks glistening with fresh tears. "I’m sorry," he said, his voice trembling.
Delphinia’s heart clenched at the sight of him. "Oh, Ashton..." she whispered. She leaned closer, gently wiping the tears from his cheeks with her fingertips. Her touch was light, careful, as though he might break under too much pressure.
As she wiped his face, her mind raced, searching for the right words to comfort him. She wanted to tell him that his mother loved him, but how could she say that when the truth might be the opposite? She couldn’t give him false hope, no matter how much she wanted to take away his pain.
Delphinia sighed softly, her hand resting on Ashton’s shoulder. "You know," she began, speaking gently but hesitating slightly, "I’m not very good at comforting people. I wish I could take away your sadness, but... I don’t know how." She offered a small, apologetic smile. "But if you want to talk, about anything, I’ll listen. I’ll always listen."
Ashton sniffled, his lower lip quivering. He looked at her with wide, watery eyes, his small frame trembling slightly.
"You’re not alone," Delphinia continued. "Not anymore. I’m here. And if you ever feel like crying, I’ll be here to wipe away your tears, just like now."
Ashton’s face relaxed, a blend of appreciation and uncertainty in his gaze.
"I know I’m not your real mother," Delphinia said again. "But I want you to know that we’re family now. That means we take care of each other, we love each other, and we’re there for each other." She reached out, pulling him into a gentle hug. "That’s what family means."
Ashton hesitated for a moment before leaning into her embrace, his small arms wrapping around her. His face pressed against her shoulder, and she could feel his warm tears soaking into her shirt.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The room was filled with the soft sound of Ashton’s sniffles and the faint rustling of the blanket as Delphinia held him. She rested her chin on top of his head, her fingers gently stroking his hair.
"You’re not alone," she whispered again. "And you never will be."
Ashton pulled back slightly, looking up at her with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Do you really mean it?" he asked, his voice small and uncertain.
Delphinia smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from his face. "Of course, I do," she said. "We’re family now, Ashton. And that means I’ll always be here for you, no matter what."
Ashton’s lips trembled before curling into a small, hesitant smile. "Thank you," he whispered back.
Delphinia nodded, her heart swelling with affection for the boy. She held him close again, her thoughts drifting to her own mother. She wondered what kind of woman her mother had been, what she might have said if she were here now. The pain of her absence still lingered, but for the first time, it felt a little less sharp.
Ashton’s small voice broke through her thoughts. "Delphinia?"
"Yes?" she replied, pulling back slightly to look at him. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"Do you think... we can always stay like this? As a family?" His eyes were filled with hope, but there was a hint of fear, as though he was afraid the answer might shatter his fragile world.
Delphinia’s smile softened, and she cupped his cheek gently. "Yes, Ashton. Always."
