Chapter 48: Hello, Dude

Evander’s shoes clicked against the floor as he made his way back from lunch. He looked as sharp as ever, his suit flawless and his tie perfectly straight. The workday had been productive so far, but his mind lingered on the mountain of paperwork waiting for him on his desk.

Pushing the heavy oak door open, he entered his spacious office, but something felt off.

His chair, was turned away from his desk, facing the large windows that overlooked the city skyline. A flicker of suspicion crossed Evander’s face, and he stopped in his track.

Before he could say anything, the chair began to spin slowly, revealing the intruder seated casually in his spot. Julian.

The younger guy lounged back, legs crossed, wearing a smug grin. "This chair," Julian said, running his hand along the armrest, "is ridiculously comfortable. I should get one of these."

Evander let out a sharp breath, his hand resting on his hip as he shot a sharp gaze on him. "What are you doing here, Julian?"

Julian didn’t immediately respond, choosing instead to stretch leisurely in the chair. Finally, he grinned, his youthful charm on full display. "Is it wrong for me to visit my hardworking older brother?"

Evander let out a low sigh, shaking his head as he moved toward the plush couch that sat against the wall. He popped open his jacket and flopped onto the couch, his face caught between a smirk and a sigh. "Please don’t tell me you’re ditching class to come here and seek shelter again."

Julian rolled his eyes dramatically, spinning the chair back to its proper position before rising. "Of course not. My classes for today are done, and the rest of the week is online. I figured, why not visit my dear brother who’s always buried in work?"

"Convenient timing," Evander remarked dryly, though there was no real bite in his tone.

Julian shrugged, that playful grin still in place as he walked to the couch and flopped down next to Evander, stretching out like he owned the place.

For a second, Evander just watched him, picking up on the trouble written all over his face. He crossed one leg over the other, calm but clearly curious. "You didn’t come all the way here just to chat, did you? Tell me you’re not here because of the news."

Julian grinned devilishly and gave Evander a playful punch on the shoulder. "Fine, you caught me. I did come to make sure the rumors were just hot gossip. But..." Lowering his voice, he leaned in slightly, like he was about to share a secret. "You really got married, huh?"

Evander didn’t flinch. He just simply nodded. "Swear?" Julian demanded, his brows shooting up.

"On my life," Evander replied smoothly.

Julian leaned back, his jaw dropping slightly. "Oh, shit. You actually did it." A soft laugh escaped him as he pushed his fingers through his hair in frustration. "You really got married and didn’t even bother to tell me or Dad and Mom?"

Evander leaned his head to the side, his sharp eyes locking onto Julian. "They don’t know yet?"

Julian gave an overly dramatic shake of his head, his face ridiculously serious. "Nope. And you should be thanking me because I’ve kept my mouth shut. Tight, even. Honestly, I thought it was just another rumor, like that time people said you had a woman in every country."

Evander chuckled under his breath, but the thought of his parents finding out made his shoulders tense. He could already imagine their reactions: his mother’s overjoyed exclamations and his father’s likely mix of pride and skepticism. Not today, he thought to himself.

Julian seemed to sense his brother’s thoughts because he reached out, patting Evander’s shoulder reassuringly. "Don’t worry. Mom’s going to be thrilled. I mean, she’s been waiting for years for you to settle down. She’s going to love having a daughter-in-law."

Evander rolled his eyes. "Your optimism is noted, Julian."

Julian smirked, leaning back against the couch. "You’re welcome."

After a moment of silence, Evander asked, "Who told you, anyway?"

Julian’s grin widened, a glint of teasing in his eyes. "I have my sources."

Evander raised a brow, unimpressed. "And you’re not going to tell me who?"

"Not a chance." Julian smirked, crossing his arms and loving every second of it.

"Of course you’re not."

"Seriously, though," Julian said, his tone turning more playful again. "I can’t believe it. You, married. I thought you’d be single forever. Honestly, I thought you were allergic to commitment or something."

Evander chuckled softly, shaking his head. "You’re not the first person to say that."

Julian leaned forward, his eyes sparkling with humor. "I just hope this woman of yours can stand you. I mean, you’re a tough guy to handle."

He let out a short laugh, a rare smirk lighting up his face. "Thanks for believing in me."

"You’re welcome," Julian replied, his grin widening.

Julian’s easygoing nature was a sharp contrast to Evander’s composed and serious demeanor, but it was clear they shared a deep affection for each other.

Julian’s voice broke through his thoughts. "By the way, you’re lucky I came to you first and not Mom. She’d probably show up here with a cake and balloons or something."

Evander shot him a look. "Don’t give her ideas."

Julian laughed, standing up and stretching. "Relax, big brother. Your secret’s safe with me... for now."

Evander watched as Julian moved toward the door, his grin lingering as he called over his shoulder, "But seriously, I expect an invitation to dinner soon. I want to meet this mysterious wife of yours."

Evander didn’t respond immediately, his expression softening as the door clicked shut behind Julian. For all his teasing and antics, Julian had a way of reminding him that family was something worth cherishing, even when it came with complications.

The tiniest smile crept onto his lips. Julian’s visit, while unplanned, wasn’t the worst thing to happen today.

He exhaled deeply, rising to his feet and straightening his suit like nothing had happened. There was still work to be done, and life, as always, wasn’t going to wait.
