Chapter 107: Sad Face

Warm sunlight spilled over the schoolyard as Delphinia came to pick up Ashton, her usual routine. Running her fingers through her hair, she couldn’t shake the conversation she’d had with Valerie earlier. The name Lydia Morgan still echoed in her mind. A famous model, breathtakingly beautiful, once linked romantically to Evander. The image Valerie painted was vivid, almost like a scene out of a glossy magazine.

She could almost see it now—Evander in a tailored suit, his striking features and magnetic presence commanding attention, standing next to Lydia, a woman whose beauty was impossible to ignore. Together, they must have looked like the perfect couple. "A picture-perfect romance," Delphinia murmured softly, a faint, amused smirk tugging at her lips.

Before she could spiral any further into her imagination, the sound of children’s laughter pulled her back to the present. She glanced towards the school gates just as a small figure came sprinting towards her. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Delphinia! Delphinia!" Ashton’s excited voice rang out, his little arms flailing in the air. His bright smile was infectious, and Delphinia felt a wave of warmth wash over her.

She crouched down just as Ashton collided into her arms, wrapping him in a tight hug. "Hey, my little tornado!" she greeted, ruffling his soft hair. "How was school today?"

"It was amazing!" Ashton declared, pulling back slightly to look at her. His face was animated as he began recounting his day. "We learned about butterflies, and Mrs. Carter said we’re going to get caterpillars so we can watch them turn into butterflies! Isn’t that cool, Delphinia?"

Delphinia let out an exaggerated gasp, her eyes widening in mock surprise. "Caterpillars? That’s so exciting! You’re going to be a butterfly expert in no time."

Ashton beamed, gripping her hand tightly as he continued his enthusiastic chatter about recess adventures and a drawing he made in art class. Delphinia paid close attention, nodding here and there and chiming in when needed, her heart swelling with affection for the little boy.

But then, a strange sensation prickled at the back of her neck. The feeling of being watched. Her eyes darted around the schoolyard, scanning the clusters of parents and children. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first, but then she spotted a figure partially obscured behind a tree not too far away.

The woman had on a snapback and a pair of huge sunglasses, her posture rigid as if trying to remain unnoticed. For a moment, Delphinia’s breath hitched. There was something eerily familiar about her.

Lydia Morgan!

The realization struck like a lightning bolt, making Delphinia’s chest tighten. She had only seen Lydia once before at school, but that face was hard to forget. Even with most of her face hidden, the model radiated sophistication and a touch of mystery.

"Delphinia?" Ashton tugged at her hand, his curious eyes following her gaze. "What are you looking at?"

Snapping out of her daze, Delphinia shook her head quickly. "Oh, nothing, sweetheart. Just thought I saw someone I knew."

When she glanced back towards the tree, Lydia was gone. Her stomach churned uneasily, but she forced herself to smile down at Ashton. "How about we go grab some dessert? You’ve earned a treat for being such a great student today."

Ashton’s eyes lit up, and he bounced on his feet. "Yay! Gelato?"

"Gelato it is," Delphinia confirmed, leading him towards the car.

The little cafe was alive with energy when they walked in. Delphinia and Ashton grabbed a spot in a corner booth. A cheerful server brought their orders—a bowl of creamy gelato for Ashton and a rich pudding for Delphinia.

Ashton dug into his gelato with gusto, his small spoon clinking against the glass bowl. Delphinia chuckled softly, watching him with adoration.

"This is the best day ever," Ashton declared between bites.

Delphinia laughed. "Every day with you is the best day ever, my little butterfly expert."

She took a spoonful of her pudding, savoring the smooth texture and subtle sweetness. For a moment, all her worries faded away, replaced by the simple joy of being with the little boy.

But then, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Ashton’s expression change. The spoon hovered in his hand as his eyebrows knit together and a faint frown pulled at his lips.

"Hey," she said gently, setting her spoon down. "What’s wrong? Did the gelato not taste good?"

Ashton shook his head, looking down at the table. "No, it’s good," he murmured, but his voice lacked its usual enthusiasm.

Delphinia followed his gaze, turning to see what had caught his attention. There was nothing unusual—just a television mounted on the wall, playing a commercial.

The screen showed Lydia Morgan, radiant and poised as she promoted a luxury skincare brand. Her flawless features and dazzling smile made her seem almost otherworldly.

She glanced back at Ashton, whose small face was clouded with an emotion she couldn’t quite place.

"Ashton," she said softly, reaching across the table to take his hand.

Ashton looked up at Delphinia, his small hand curling slightly under her touch. He offered a smile, the kind she wouldn’t have fallen for after spending so much time with him. It didn’t quite reach his eyes, and the burden on his young face still clear beneath it.

"It’s okay, Delphinia," he said. Then, as if to dismiss any concern, he picked up his spoon and dipped it into the gelato, taking a big bite and savoring it like nothing had happened.

Delphinia watched him, her own smile growing out of instinct. "That’s my boy," she murmured, even as her heart ached. She let the moment play out, unwilling to push him further for now. If he wanted to act as though everything was fine, she would let him. For now.

But as Ashton ate his gelato, chatting idly about how good it tasted, Delphinia couldn’t shake the feeling gnawing at her. That smile he’d given her—it wasn’t real. She’d seen his genuine grin countless times, the one that lit up his whole face and made his eyes sparkle. This wasn’t it.

Her gaze flicked back to the television for a moment. The commercial was over, replaced by something else entirely. Yet, she couldn’t help but wonder what had gone through Ashton’s mind when he’d seen Lydia Morgan on the screen.

What had stirred such sadness in her little boy that he’d had to bury it behind a mask?
