Academic gathering with a lich-Chapter 633 - 586 The Giant Dragon Behind
"If it’s not an echo, it’s just some loud beast, right?" At this moment, Lyle really wanted to forget that roar and didn’t want to think about the message hidden behind that roar.
"It’s not my echo, the power in the roar is much weaker than mine. As for the possibility of a large beast... hmm... I can’t rule out the possibility of a Mimic Monster, but to capture the voice of a Giant Dragon as bait... whatever that thing is, it’s worth taking a look," he said.
The roar had captivated the Giant Dragon completely, and as he said these things, his thoughts likely converged with Lyle’s.
It was the roar of a Giant Dragon, another one.
The curiosity of the Liches and the competitive spirit of the Giant Dragon both drove the Giant Dragon towards that location to find the creature that dared to challenge itself.
The left wing bone slid in front of Lyle, the Giant Dragon’s gaze shifted to the opposite side where the roar had come from, and the drooping wing bone became a stairway for Lyle to ride.
"Come on up, Lyle."
Knowing he could not stop his excited teacher, Lyle could only support his actions.
"Teacher, are you sure you know what it is?"
"Not certain, but whatever that thing is, its response in roar definitely carries a meaning of provocation in the Dragon Language, although the sound I made originally was also meant as a provocation. If it is really an overconfident Mimic Monster, we could extract its vocal sac and vocal cords, which are quite rare Spellcasting Materials, and can be used to construct some special aberrational creations. You could also make it into some interesting deceptive tools, as the Literature Club has experts in that area."
"If it’s such rare material, teacher will need it too, so I don’t need it..."
The Giant Dragon soared into the sky.
"The loot from the Mimic Monster is all yours..."
Before Lyle could be touched by the gesture, the Giant Dragon added.
"Because I’m going to let you face the Mimic Monster alone, and the victor enjoys the spoils."
"...Another extracurricular test?"
"You could say that, since the Mimic Monster is too weak for me," said the Giant Dragon.
The Giant Dragon carried Lyle toward his assignment.
It was a forest of giant trees, layers of yellowed dead leaves covered the ground, giving a soft feeling underfoot, like pillows. And it was summer now.
The Giant Dragon looked around and began his classroom lecture.
"The Mimic Monster not only imitates the sound of its bait, it also sets up the terrain and traps, hiding nearby to ambush. The Mimic Monster is a sort of soft-bodied creature with sharp teeth in its mouth, its skin surface can mimic its surroundings, and while its transformable body is quite fragile, its ambush is lethal, at least to the living."
Lyle looked up at the gaps in the forest canopy and the surrounding traces.
"Instructor, I suspect there really might be a dragon here. Look at those broken branches, judging by the outline of the gaps, its size should be between twenty-seven and thirty-two meters. And those claw marks... it flew away. This area, teacher, was just a temporary stopping point for the Giant Dragon. The vegetation around is intact! It couldn’t have left on the ground."
The Giant Dragon nodded in approval, "Your deduction makes sense, Lyle. But these could also be traces faked by the Mimic Monster. They are quite intelligent creatures, closely related to high-intelligence aquatic monsters from a biological classification standpoint. Here’s what we’ll do, Lyle, I’ll track down the movements of the Giant Dragon, and you stay put, watch out for the Mimic Monster’s ambush."
Lyle nodded. Although it was somewhat dangerous to leave himself there, the Giant Dragon instructor was now presumably more concerned with the clues of an unknown kin. Besides, hadn’t Lyle faced danger before?
The Giant Dragon’s bony wings disappeared above, and after the flapping wind ceased, the forest seemed much quieter. Nia’s tentacles dripped with slime, and flesh and blood mire crawled out from Lyle’s back. Perhaps he was more of a monster than the Mimic Monster now. To dispel the nervous tension with self-mockery, Lyle looked around a bit tensely.
Looking around frantically was an expression of one’s panic and unease about the surrounding environment, a rather unwise sign of weakness when facing an enemy, as it can give an intelligent foe a psychological advantage, prompting a swifter attack.
Lyle was luring the enemy.
The thick layer of dead leaves on the ground served as Nia’s perfect hiding place to conceal herself and scout the surroundings. Lyle stood still, like a chicken-hearted novice adventurer panicking at every shadow. Beneath his feet, lively tentacles spread through the leaves as if growing roots, laying out the trap.
Lyle silently wove his web. Soon, the overconfident predator would transform from hunter to hunted.
The tentacles crawled through the gaps in the dry leaves and the damp soil, extending five, ten, twenty meters... Just when they were about to cover the entire field of vision, Lyle’s eyes widened. He realized that the lurker had a similar idea.
It was under the dead leaves!
"Roar!!!" The deafening roar erupted once again, right before him. Leaves scattered into the air as the massive creature hidden within lunged at Lyle. The flash of light from those shadowy eyes sent a chill crawling up Lyle’s spine.
These abnormal dead leaves served as the lurker’s camouflage, for its body was immense. Such a vast body struggled to be nimble while possessing strength.
Before the claws could reach him, Lyle still had time to counterattack.
"Aging Curse!" The cursing technique that reduced the target’s speed worked well in controlling most creatures.
"Nia!" Lyle’s powerful tentacles helped him move swiftly, dodging those claws with ease.
However, there was no response.
Neither magic power nor Nia responded under the gaze of those deep purple vertical pupils. Lyle, like a disarmed ordinary person, could only watch the massive shadow pounce towards him.
"Magic disruption? Sealing barrier?"
This beast was the bane of all spellcasters.
"Roar!!!" Lyle could hear the excitement in the roar; she reveled in the victory seemingly within her grasp.
A larger shadow descended from the sky, pausing the hearts of both Lyle and the predator for a moment.
Ghastly white bone claws, followed by the Giant Dragon’s roar, descended.
"How dare you harm my child!!!"
Lyle watched as Mr. Giant Dragon furiously dug his claws into the creature’s nape, hoisting the entire shadow into the air. A terrifying body slam unfolded above, smashing it brutally into the earth.
"Roar!!!" A piercing scream erupted as the shadow unleashed its survival instincts, escaping from the Giant Dragon’s talons and diving into the shadows to flee into the distance.
"Flee? I will make you die in a desperate flight, wailing under my ravaging!"
"Wait, Mr. Giant Dragon!" Lyle stood firm, stopping Mr. Giant Dragon who was about to take flight in pursuit.
"I can feel it, Lyle, that creature can seal magic power. Dammit, it almost killed you, unforgivable. Don’t worry, my strongest attribute isn’t magic power. I will tear its corpse to pieces and bring it back, Lyle."
"That’s not what I mean, Mr. Giant Dragon," Lyle quickly dug out a disk-sized black scale from the pile of leaves, left behind from when the Giant Dragon and the shadow clashed.
"It’s okay, Lyle, injuries are inevitable in battle, I also don’t... this isn’t my scale?!"
Nia, back online, parted the leaves to reveal a mass of sticky black bloodstains.
"Exactly, this is its scale. The one ambushing me was a dragon."
