Abyss Summoner-Chapter 244 - 239: Dignity Let Go
"Made it through?"
Lu Wei, lost and flustered, shot dead a zombie, stumbling along behind the main group, heading towards the industrial district.
"Ugh!"
He gagged, vomiting some yellow bile; in fact, he had long since emptied his stomach along the way, killing as he went.
The taste was one thing, but when he blew off a zombie's head with a gun, it wasn't much different from killing a person. Just earlier, he had personally killed a child zombie, whose age seemed similar to his sister's, yet a large chunk of flesh was missing from its neck, indicating it was bitten off alive before it died.
Lu Wei used a bullet to end its life.
The tiny head exploded in the face of the bullet, and the petite body still maintained a running posture, reminding him of his sister, who always ran towards him when they met.
Lu Wei saw everything with his own eyes, reinforcing his decision to join Order.
If not for the adults, he and his sister would likely have become one of them, and he would be the one whose head got blown off.
There's no room for mercy.
Lu Wei was very clear; these were merely monsters with human faces. He was learning, adapting, with only one certainty… following Chen Feng was the right choice.
The master provided him with everything.
As long as it's the master's orders, fulfilling them is the right thing to do.
-- Undead Resurgence.
The Undead Mage followed behind, and when humans were about to reach the wall, he raised the Bone Staff, a faint blue light shone on the zombies attempting to attack.
In an instant, the front-row zombies seemed to go mad, violently trembling as if something inside was awakening. The next second, their bodies exploded, leaving only skeletons smeared with flesh strands.
The Undead Mage cast the Revival Spell on the zombies, directly summoning a new group of Skeleton Warriors. But, compared to other skeletons clad in Insect Armor and wielding Steel Sabers, these new skeletons had very weak defense and lackluster attack power.
But it was sufficient.
These skeletons weren't meant for combat but as cannon fodder, tasked with delaying the zombies' advance.
The newborn skeletons loyally fulfilled the Undead Mage's orders, charging backward like a wall of bones, temporarily halting the zombies' charge.
"Open the gate!"
"Now, hurry and open the gate!"
Xu Hongzhuang silently observed the battlefield changes, almost roaring her orders to the nearby warriors once she saw Chen Feng's group successfully break through the zombie horde and reach below the wall.
"Creak..."
The industrial district's building gate, reinforced and requiring the cooperation of over twenty people, was ordered by Xu Hongzhuang to be slowly lifted, weighing several tons.
"Full speed ahead!"
Chen Feng took everything in. It was a perfect opportunity.
As a successful leader, he knew when to fight or retreat. With his low growl, the human warriors immediately accelerated, rushing into the industrial district at a rapid pace.
"Someone must hold the rear and make a sacrifice."
Chen Feng silently clenched his fist, glancing at the Dark Elf, who had long become a Priest. She nodded knowingly, some chants lingering on her lips, and the Wax Melting Demon seemed to feel something, dragging its fiery body and forming a second line of defense in front of the others.
Why sacrifice the Wax Melting Demon?
Why think so much? Anyway, it's the master's command, and she just needs to obey.
From the moment Chen Feng summoned her, their interests were tightly bound together, and the Wax Melting Demon's life wasn't within the Dark Elf's consideration.
Thousands of zombies easily tore through the blocking skeletons, and soon, the decayed bodies continued their assault forward.
The Wax Melting Demon, a sentient being, gazed at the zombie horde with some fear, but similarly to a summoned creature, it must unconditionally follow the Priest's commands in the short term.
Even if the command meant its death. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Thousands of zombies surrounded the Wax Melting Demon; although it repelled some with its tentacles, the zombies' fearless nature led them to close in one after the other.
The Wax Melting Demon's strength was depleted, even losing several tentacles under the zombies' assault, its appearance becoming pitifully battered.
"Bang!"
Finally, the Wax Melting Demon could only end its life through self-destruction, and the explosive force rendered the zombies within five meters incapable of fighting.
As the zombies once again organized their forces, attempting to launch an attack, Chen Feng and his group had already entered the stronghold.
Rotten blood.
Permeated the battlefield.
Outside the city walls, numerous bodies lay sprawled in disarray. Among them were half-corpses, desperately crawling on the ground.
Chen Feng's assault threw the zombies into chaos. If originally, they were just a step away from the city walls, now they had to start all over again.
This gave the defending warriors a chance to catch their breath.
Xu Hongzhuang saw the zombies in disarray and let out a sigh of relief. However, her head felt dizzy, and she suddenly collapsed straight onto the ground.
She hadn't slept for more than thirty hours. Her endurance was purely due to her strong willpower. Now that the industrial area's danger was eliminated, and her mission finally complete, she fell into unconsciousness.
She desperately needed a peaceful rest.
.........
Blood.
Dripped down one drop at a time.
Xu Hongzhuang's vision was a blur. She could faintly recognize that the place in front of her was indeed the East Bridge where she lived. But unlike the image in her mind, the city had now been breached by zombies and insects. Bodies piled up on the ground, devoured beyond recognition. The once vast city resembled Hell, with no survivors.
"Ah!"
With a scream, Xu Hongzhuang sat up abruptly from the bed.
"You had a nightmare."
A familiar voice came from beside her. Xu Hongzhuang instinctively assumed a defensive posture but relaxed upon seeing a familiar face.
"Thank you."
In fact, Xu Hongzhuang didn't know what to say. Regardless of the person's intentions, just for saving the industrial area, she felt she should express her gratitude.
"Just these two words? You know what I want."
Chen Feng's lips curled into a slight smile, carrying a hint of sarcasm: "In your most dangerous moment, where was the Colonel Feng you spoke of? If not for me, this place would have been razed to the ground, and you, along with everyone here, would have become zombie food."
Xu Hongzhuang's face flushed with anger. It seemed Chen Feng's words had pierced her heart, making her chest heave visibly, revealing her full figure to Chen Feng.
Chen Feng sat beside her, not like a commander who just participated in a bloody battle, but more like a traveler casually passing by. He said calmly, "You must give me an answer. For your plea for help, four of my men perished, and two were infected by the corpse poison."
War is merciless. No matter how meticulous the preparations, once on the battlefield, changes could happen at any time.
Some warriors would stay forever at the base of the wall, where their companions couldn't even have the chance to take them along, leaving the tragedy to unfold.
Chen Feng half-closed his eyes and said solemnly, "They shouldn't have died…"
Xu Hongzhuang's face turned significantly pale. She struggled a bit, her expression filled with despair and pain, "I... I can pledge my loyalty to you, but I cannot betray the colonel. Privately... I can agree to your request to have people join the Iron Demon Army. All I ask is that you consider the greater good of East Bridge..."
Loyalty?
Chen Feng displayed a look of interest and glanced at her, saying, "I don't believe in verbal loyalty. Actions speak louder than words. As I said before, I won't target Feng Zhiyong. My goal is singular, to support you into power."
"However..."
Just as Xu Hongzhuang said all this, as if releasing a huge burden from her heart, Chen Feng stood up and grabbed her chin.
Chen Feng pinched Xu Hongzhuang's chin between his fingers and ordered, "Look at me."
Unable to break free, Xu Hongzhuang could only lift her head to gaze at Chen Feng. Before she could react, Chen Feng's pupils began to rotate, and a scene of disaster appeared in her mind.
Illusion.
A real, immersive illusion.
No one knew what Xu Hongzhuang saw; her pupils contracted, and after Chen Feng dispelled the illusion, she collapsed by the bedside, her mind blank, saliva seeping from between her lips, slowly dripping onto the sheets.
After prolonged exhaustion, she had less than half of her usual strength left, unable to resist Chen Feng's illusion attack.
"I don't like betrayal. Remember what you've said today. If one day, you act against my wishes, then I will let you experience..."
"What true despair means."
