Abyss Descension: I Perform Rituals to Evolve In The Apocalyps-Chapter 48: A good man
Chapter 48 - A good man
Led by Kev, the group of survivors left the hall behind, crossed the stone bridge, and entered the maze of tunnels, hoping to find the exit to the Abyssal Burrows without encountering life-threatening dangers.
"Where are we going?" Bell asked.
"There's this tunnel I came across some hours ago. It splits into two paths. One leads left, the other right. I took the left path, and it led me to the hall where you all were trapped. As you know, it's a dead end. I haven't explored the right path. I have a strong feeling the exit might lie somewhere along the right path."
Bell asked, "How far is it?"
"At the rate we're moving," Kev replied, "we'll reach it in three to four hours."
"Some of us aren't in a condition to walk that far," Bell reminded him.
The group of survivors hadn't eaten properly in three days. Doctor Bell and the gangsters were in good shape, so they could walk for hours, but the same couldn't be said for the rest, especially Pete, the young teenager suffering from blood cancer.
"Don't worry about them," Kev said.
"It's hard not to worry," Doctor Bell replied.
"Then you'll be worrying needlessly," Kev said with a smile.
"You have a way to help them?" Doctor Bell asked.
Kev calmly nodded.
"What is it?" Doctor Bell asked again.
Kev said, "I'll show you in a moment."
He turned to the group and said, "Guys, I have something for you that will help immensely. Form a proper line. When I call your name, come forward and wait for me to hand out the things. Got it?"
The survivors nodded.
Kev called out Pete's name first.
Pete walked up to him expectantly, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw a bunch of hexagonal crystals appear in Kev's hand seemingly out of thin air.
Some of the crystals were red, some glowed with a vivid green hue meant for agility and stamina, and others radiated a milky white light.
Pete didn't know why, but when he saw the crystals with the milky white glow, his mouth watered and an intense urge to consume them surged through him.
Although his instincts were too strong to ignore, he didn't act like a child. He didn't snatch them from Kev's hand, even though he knew they were meant for him. He behaved with restraint and dignity like a proper human being.
"Wow! He just pulled out a bunch of crystals from thin air. Mom, Dad, did you see that?" Chandu said excitedly.
His mother placed a gentle hand on his head, ruffling his hair.
His father, on the other hand, had quite the opposite reaction. He shot him a sidelong glance, his eyes narrowed in mild disappointment. They had seen monsters. They had seen the manipulation of shadows. They had seen a talking and flying book. So what was so shocking about objects being pulled out of thin air? To him, it felt like his son was overreacting.
But Chandu wasn't overreacting.
He was just extremely excited.
After all, he was witnessing things he had only ever read about in novels.
Actually, he was a huge fan of novelkisss. To be more specific, he had read over a thousand cultivation novels. To him, Kev felt just like one of those stern yet dependable senior brothers the main protagonist encounters at the beginning of his journey. Someone they come to rely on greatly.
Yes, in his mind, he was the protagonist destined for greatness who will save everybody. He didn't find his thoughts laughable. After all, wasn't everyone the protagonist of their story in this world?
"Is Big Brother a magician?" Wang Yuxin asked curiously.
Doctor Bell looked thoughtful. "He has a magic pouch... or maybe an interspatial ring."
Agatha noticed the complexity in Bell's gaze and thought, He's hiding something.
Pete looked at Kev in disbelief. "How did you do that?"
Kev just smiled mysteriously before handing the crystals to Pete. "Consume them and tell me how you feel."
Pete followed his instructions without question.
He trusted Kev, not because he fully understood him, but because Kev had pulled him out of the suffocating darkness he'd been drowning in ever since he was diagnosed with cancer and hurt by his parents.
He was just a stranger to Kev, but he went out of his way to give him a reason to live. He didn't need to do it. But he did anyway, and that made him a good, trustworthy man in Pete's eyes.
Besides, Pete's instincts screamed that the crystals were beneficial.
As soon as he ate them, his eyes widened and he gasped, his face lighting up in astonishment.
"Amazing," Pete whispered.
The exhaustion that had clung to him like a second layer of skin melted away, replaced by a cool vitality that surged through his limbs, making his blood feel lighter and his breath deeper and easier.
He looked at Kev without blinking. "What did you just feed me? I feel better than I've felt in years!"
"I mentioned before that killing Revenants can be beneficial," Kev said. "These are the benefits. They're called runes and nuclei. Runes can enhance your body, and the nucleus can forcefully extend your lifespan."
"Nucleus?" Pete repeated, hope flickering in his voice. He wondered if this might be the key to outliving his cancer.
The source of this c𝐨ntent is freeweɓnovēl.coɱ.
Kev then called out to Wang Yuxin. Pete stepped aside as she approached.
It didn't take long for Kev to finish enchanting and revitalizing the survivors with his runes and nuclei. The runes pushed their physical capabilities closer to the peak of mortal limits, while the nuclei dispelled the deep exhaustion they had accumulated over the past few days and filled them up with so much energy they felt like they could run for hours.
"Son, you are a good person," Parwi praised Kev. "Not many people would part with such mystical treasures so selflessly for the sake of others."
In response, he smiled self-deprecatingly.
Seeing this, Doctor Bell, who was skilled at reading people, sensed that Kev had done something in his past that he deeply regretted, something that made him genuinely believe he wasn't a good person.
'What could it be?' He wondered.
Kev had run out of runes and nuclei, as he had used every last one to ensure that no one would become a burden on the group or be left behind, and honestly, he didn't regret it.
He had helped them in every way he could. If they still ended up dying, he might feel bad maybe even sad but he wouldn't feel guilty.
Following that, he shared some of his weapons with the others.
Like Doctor Bell had said, strength lay in unity. Equipping people who were already stronger than average humans with weapons wouldn't just improve their chances of survival. It would turn their group of ten into a force to be reckoned with. That was the reason behind Kev's most recent action.
Items of extreme lethality like his gun and rifle were handed over to Agatha and Lena.
The reason behind this was simple.
He knew them. He trusted them.
While he didn't trust Agatha as much as he trusted Lena, there was a contract binding them. Breaking it would only bring harm to Agatha, and Kev didn't think she was foolish enough to break it or heartless enough to betray him.
He gave one of his combat knives to Doctor Bell and the other to the family of three. With this, they should be able to deal with the minor threats of this Abyssal Burrow.
He then signaled Agatha to look after Wang Yuxin. Agatha, more than willing, gladly accepted the responsibility.
"Okay let's get moving," Kev said.
"What about us?" Lola and the Gangster looked at him like ghosts who had been wronged.
"I have nothing left to give," Kev said flatly.
He didn't want to lend out the items he was left with.
As a result, he couldn't spare anything for Lola or the gangster.
They might feel bad about it, but he didn't care. Their feelings didn't matter to him.
Hours passed.
As they drew closer to the destination Kev had in mind, a great change took place in one of the tunnels they've crossed.
In one of the dark tunnels, rotting hands as large as boulders burst through the earth. These hands pressed against the walls on either side, their blackened and sharp fingers digging into them, pushing out an enormous being with a grotesque form.
It sniffed the air.
A glint of excitement flashed in its only eye as it picked up on the lingering human scent.
Then, it roared.
As if some kind of command has been issued.
A shadowy figure leaped off its shoulder and gave chase.
Its target was none other than Kev and the group of survivors.
The enormous being also moved.
Despite its size, it was only a little slower than the shadowy figure!
Hell was upon Kev and the others. But they were clueless!
