Abnormal Gourmet Chronicle-Chapter 1141 - 550: Wang Gen Sheng’s Letter
Wang Gen Sheng's dumpling tasting is still going on.
Although he doesn't understand why potatoes are wrapped in wheat flour to make dumplings instead of just mixing them with noodles as a dish, Wang Gen Sheng still finds them delicious.
These potato dumplings, although unconventional, are oily and made with wheat flour, so they're tasty.
Wang Gen Sheng boiled a pot of hot water on a coal stove, used a broken lunch box as a cup, mixed hot and cold water into warm water, drank a few sips, and continued to eat the next dumpling.
The next dumpling was even more peculiar.
Tofu dumplings.
Tofu dumplings are rare but not unheard of. Qin Huai had heard about them but never tried them. However, Qin Huai could confidently say that the tofu dumplings he's heard of were definitely not the same as the ones Wang Gen Sheng had in his lunch box.
The filling in these dumplings was obviously a dish, and a famous one at that—Scallion Tofu Salad.
Although Xu Nuo added some chili oil and mixed in some pickled vegetables into the scallion tofu filling, it was clear that these dumplings were not any legitimate tofu dumplings.
The tofu dumplings deeply shocked Qin Huai, and they also shocked Wang Gen Sheng.
After eating the tofu dumplings, Wang Gen Sheng drank half a box of water. It was spicy, as the tofu dumplings were laden with chili oil, turning the white tofu a red oily color, and there were pickled peppers mixed in with the pickled vegetables.
Qin Huai greatly admired Wang Gen Sheng's endurance. If it were him eating such dumplings, even just one, at least half of the Fermented Rice with Steamed Buns in his lunch box would have disappeared.
The third dumpling was still a tofu dumpling, and Wang Gen Sheng mixed another lunch box of warm water.
The fourth dumpling was a loofah dumpling, made with stewed loofah. When Wang Gen Sheng opened this mystery dumpling box and found such a rare hidden variety, Qin Huai was almost certain that Xu Nuo's claim of lacking meat fillings and just throwing something together meant that all the leftover dishes from lunch were wrapped inside.
For a moment, Qin Huai didn't even know where to start complaining.
To say Xu Nuo is bad, well, he's actually pretty good. As fellow spirits who failed their Crossing Tribulation, when meeting similar beings, he helps whenever he can, and he helps without leaving a name.
For Shi Dadan, who could seek help using his real name in his first life, Xu Nuo would help overtly, but for someone like Wang Gen Sheng, who had already lost memories related to being a spirit, he would help quietly, finding ways to assist and providing help without hurting their pride.
Seeing that his fellow spirit is having a tough time during the New Year, he doesn't forget to bring him some nice dishes and wrap up some dumplings.
If you say he's good, well.
On New Year's Eve, he wrapped all the leftover dishes from his home as dumpling fillings, gave them to the Law Beast, and took three pounds of meat back to make braised pork, as if treating the Law Beast as a trash can to clean up the inventory, making it convenient to have a feast on New Year's Eve.
This couldn't be said to be unreasonable since Xu Nuo didn't charge any money.
But it just feels... not quite right.
It's like doing a good deed but intentionally mixing in a pinch of sand, making it feel not so good.
Wang Gen Sheng realized what the dumpling fillings were by the end. He may not understand dumplings, but he understood Xu Nuo's household cuisine.
After finishing the last dumpling, Wang Gen Sheng drank the warm water in his lunch box in one go. He closed the box, which now only had two Fermented Rice with Steamed Buns left, and put the lunch box back into the cupboard.
Qin Huai thought that considering Wang Gen Sheng's personality, he would return to the textile factory to resume work after eating, as it wasn't dark yet and wasn't past Wang Gen Sheng's quitting time. At the very least, he would go to the cafeteria with his empty lunch box to get some food. Although the chef at the textile factory's cafeteria wasn't very skilled, there would definitely be some good food on New Year's Eve. Getting some to save for supper later would also be nice.
In the end, Wang Gen Sheng didn't do that. He maintained his eating posture, sitting on the bed, leaning towards the table, and took out letter paper and the most valuable item in his room—a fountain pen—from the drawer, and started writing a letter.
Qin Huai curiously leaned in to see who Wang Gen Sheng was writing a letter to.
Wang Gen Sheng's handwriting was beautiful. Qin Huai could see that when Wang Gen Sheng was working, but Wang Gen Sheng always used a pencil at work, keeping the fountain pen on him and only taking it out for important occasions.
Dear Father and Mother:
Seeing this letter is as if meeting face to face.
Today is New Year's Eve. Please forgive your unfilial son for not being able to return home for the New Year because of the long journey. It's been over three months since I last wrote. I have received the letter Big Brother sent two months ago. It's joyous news that Sister-in-law is pregnant and going to add a new member to the family. Please advise Big Brother not to worry about this. I will try to get friends to exchange some red sugar to send back for Sister-in-law to nourish her body.
I know Father and Mother worry about my current situation. Everything is going well for me in Gusu. The benefits and treatment at the textile factory are excellent. There are seldom stones or sand in the mixed grain meals, and there are oil stars visible in the boiled cabbage. I eat rice in boiling water every day, have boiled cabbage every three days, occasionally with an egg on the side. With the pickled vegetables Mother made, the meals are much better than living on sweet potatoes at home, so there's no need to worry about me. It's just that the pickled vegetables are not enough, so could Mother please send a few jars before April.
Big Brother is a porter and consumes a lot physically, while Sister-in-law is pregnant again. Second Brother and Big Sister are far away in the Northwest, so the money I send back should be used for the family, Father and Mother included. I don't need you to save it for me. My high school tuition was paid from Sister-in-law's dowry, and my university travel ticket was from Second Brother's youth subsidy. Now, Gen Sheng can only contribute a small amount with hard work, striving for an early promotion.
Father asked in the last letter if my work at the textile factory is going smoothly. Everything is going well. Colleagues are kind, leaders appreciate me, and important tasks are given to me. Although busy, I am able to handle it.
Mother asked in the last letter if I have made new friends, and I have indeed made a good friend named Xu Nuo. He is enthusiastic, vibrant, sometimes behaves unexpectedly but is an extremely kind person with a caring heart. Today is New Year's Eve, and he specially brought me two boxes of food, including a dish called dumplings.
