Abandoned by the Alpha, I Became the Lycan King's Mate-Chapter 402 Landing on the Island Again
[Donald’s Perspective]
"Anthony? Are you suggesting to assign Anthony to investigate the underwater passage? But he’s still outside now; wouldn’t it be a bit late to rush him here?"
When I mentioned Anthony’s name, Christian seemed a bit surprised but he quickly came to accept it. Recalling our previous meeting with Anthony outside, he asked me with confusion.
I took a light breath and explained, "I did have another assignment for him before, but the circumstances have changed, and investigating the passage is clearly more important now. Anthony is an excellent Beta; he’s meticulous, patient, brave, and strategic—it’s perfect to entrust him with this task!"
As I spoke, I looked back at Christian and hooked the corner of my mouth as I continued, "As for your concern that he’s outside and might not make it in time for the task... Don’t worry, I reckon you’ll see him in about 5 minutes!"
It didn’t actually take 5 minutes; not long after my words had ended, Anthony was brought up on deck by Elliot, and for safety reasons, Elizabeth didn’t come with him this time.
"Your Majesty! The Lycan troops assigned to Anthony are assembled and ready for your command,"
Elliot, who had been on duty since his return without rest, reported. I glanced at him, nodded to acknowledge I heard.
I took two steps closer to Anthony, speaking solemnly and with gravity, "Elliot has told you all the information. This mission is urgent and fraught with danger, but I trust in your abilities and am certain you will face no issues! Set off, and be cautious."
Upon hearing this, Anthony immediately knelt on one knee, with his fist against his heart, and said in a deep voice, "I offer my life and soul for Your Majesty and the Wolf royal family."
I laughed at that, clapped him on the shoulder in jest and said, "I always feel that phrase is a bit ominous now. You’d better return unharmed, or neither Elizabeth nor Margaret will let me off the hook! Go now, and may all go well."
"Yes," Anthony replied with a smile, his eyes tender like he was thinking of something, and with an agile response, he turned and walked away briskly.
Christian and I watched his retreating figure for several seconds before turning our gazes away.
"Your Majesty, you should go rest for a bit too. You’ll need to direct the entire battle later," Christian suggested timely.
I knew he was right, but how could I possibly sleep? My mind was constantly preoccupied with Margaret’s condition.
"I won’t be able to sleep lying down; I need to re-evaluate the battle plan for later. You’ve also been worn out these past few days, go take a rest yourself," I replied.
Christian shook his head upon hearing this and respectfully said, "I’m not tired. I’ll stay with you."
Seeing his response, I didn’t push further, hummed acknowledgment and with hands in pockets, returned inside the cabin. This battle would be the biggest and most difficult one I have ever commanded in my life. It would be a lie to say I wasn’t nervous at all, for no one is unafraid of failure. But a life-or-death showdown between Martha and myself was inevitable.
As day broke and Poison Snake Island’s silhouette lost its mysterious and treacherous appearance, what revealed itself before us was its most common aspect. This time we didn’t anchor the command ship, but boldly stopped right under the cliffs. Due to the darkness last night, we hadn’t noticed a significant protrusion of rock at the cliff’s base!
It was about a dozen meters above the sea level, perfect for mooring the command ship.
"Is the Moon goddess aiding us? Our battle today will surely be a triumphant victory!" Elliot, touching the military dagger at his waist, said spiritedly.
I moved my somewhat stiff neck, raised my eyebrows without saying a word, and gave the order to all to disembark onto the island!
Thanks to yesterday’s reconnaissance, our landing on the island was much smoother, even though the enemy’s patrols and defenses had clearly increased.
We cleared out many werewolves on our way but became cautious as we neared the hospital Simo referred to! He was right; Henry’s men had fortified it into an impenetrable defense.
I crouched low in the bushes, observing the enemy’s defense line through binoculars.
"The hospital is backed by a mountain range, and the enemy has checkpoints all along the way in. We have no choice but to break through by force," Elliot reported, his brow furrowed in cool analysis.
I put down my binoculars, glanced at my watch, and said, "A frontal assault definitely won’t work. By the time we break in, Henry might have moved Margaret. Or he might use Margaret to threaten me, and that would put me at a disadvantage."
I swallowed the rest of that thought, turned to Christian, and asked, "Has there been any response from the squads assigned to assist the main army?"
