A Wrong Surrogate for the CEO-Chapter 96: Her father heard...
Lara scoffed as she stood up. She faced Laura and held the woman’s gaze.
"And why should I believe you?" she asked her husband’s sister.
Laura folded her arms on her chest as she spoke.
"I know we didn’t exactly get off on the right foot. And I am so sorry about that. But believe me or not, I was actually looking out for my brother. Nobody knew who you were. We’ve never seen you with him before. You are not popular enough to be on the internet or something, and all of a sudden he brought you home. You were married, and pregnant. We were... worried. But I’ll admit that my parents took things far. I had nothing to do with their actions," she explained.
Her words made sense to Lara. It was a logical explanation, and truth be told, Laura didn’t exactly do anything except listen to her mother’s command.
Still, Lara looked to the side to hold Lazarus gaze. The bodyguard said nothing, and his expression didn’t show what he was thinking.
So Lara excused herself and walked over to where he was.
"What do you think, Lazarus?" she asked quietly, making sure to keep her voice down.
Lazarus inclined his head towards Laura.
"I don’t know, but I think she might be sincere," he stated softly.
"I know. But what if this ends up to be a trap? What if she’s lying to me and this is all an elaborate scheme by her and her mother to you know, get rid of me."
Lazarus nodded curtly.
"I understand. But you see, we don’t have any other choice. You need to find a way to get into the boss’s ward and see him, but you can’t do that without help. I would suggest taking out the bodyguards myself, but this is an hospital. Violence is prohibited. My hands are tied. And until the boss wakes up, that woman is not going to let you see him," the bodyguard explained.
Lara chewed on her bottom lip.
"So Laura is my only option?" she prompted.
Lazarus nodded.
Lara sighed and walked back to where Laura was standing.
"Just so you know, I still don’t fully trust you," she stated.
Curtis sister nodded. "Fair enough."
Lara went on. "But you are the only hope I have, and I desperately need to see my husband. So I am going to have no choice than to stick with you."
Laura gave her a small smile.
"Thank you so much, Lara. Really. I am rooting for you and Curtis," she said.
Lara raised her eyebrows at her but said nothing to that effect. She asked a different question instead.
"What is your plan?"
The smile faded away from Laura’s face.
"First things first, you need to know that we can’t get rid of my mother completely. At least not until I can come up with something that would work as an effective lure. Also, my father is going to be here anytime soon, and even though he is not going to stay as long as my mother, he is going to be making periodic visits. So we need to take him into account too."
Lara listened attentively, and when Laura paused, she took it as a sign to ask a question.
"What about the bodyguards? How are we going to account for them?" she asked.
Lazarus stepped forward and cleared his throat.
"I think I can handle them by myself. I didn’t want to do anything that would get me in trouble and further ruin your chances, but now that we have someone helping us, I think I am willing to take a chance," the bodyguard stated firmly.
Lara started to feel tendrils of hope shooting up her spine.
If these people — Laura, especially — did as they said and helped her, then she would be able to see and spend time with Curtis.
She nodded and took a deep breath.
"Okay. So we can’t get rid of your mother permanently, but we should be able to do it temporarily, yes? You can lure her out for a few hours?" she prompted.
Laura nodded.
"That is exactly what I am going to do. I have already wasted too much time here, so I have to go back. Please give me your contact. Once I go back there, I am going to find a way to lure her out. Then I’ll send you a text, and Lazarus can go deal with the bodyguards. You will have free access, and then you can spend time with Curtis. I’ll send you a text to let you know when we are on our way back, so you can leave and get away safely without running into us."
Lara thought the plan was sound and that it could work.
So she held out her hand for Laura to shake.
"Deal."
Curtis’s sister shook her hand back with an amused smile, said goodbye, and strolled to the door.
Then she pushed the door open and froze. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Lara noticed how stiff Laura was, and she was curious to know what happened. So she took a few steps forward to see what was going on.
The moment Lara’s eyes settled on the person standing before Laura, a gasp slipped past her lips.
It was Curtis’s Father.
The man was glaring at his daughter, and Laura had a sinking feeling that he had heard every single word she and Lara just exchanged.
"Father..." she said quietly.
He shook his head at her, not bothering to glance at Lara or the bodyguard.
"What do you think you’re doing, Laura?" he asked, his voice sharp and harsh.
"It’s not what you think it is, Father," she stated in response.
The man scoffed.
"I am not a fool, Laura. I think I know what is going on here, and I have to tell you that I am disappointed in you," he snapped.
Laura rubbed the bridge of her nose in exasperation.
"Please, just give me a chance to explain," she insisted.
But Mr. Rodney just shook his head at his daughter, turned around and walked down the hallway.
Laura immediately went after her father, and as Lara watched them leave, she wondered if their plan would still work now that they had been caught.
