Chapter 57: We Need Confirmation First

The next morning dawned slow and heavy.

Not like the golden-syrup sunrises Evelisse loved. This one peeked through her curtains like it was shy, soft with mist and silence. There was a hush in the castle—like even the birds agreed something strange had crept in with the moonlight.

Evelisse rolled over and stared at the dollhouse drawer. She could feel it. The weight of it. Like the box was *waiting*.

Snugglewuff snored softly beside her, little legs kicking in a dream-chase. Fluffy floated midair near the windowsill, ears flicking. He’d stayed close all night, unusually quiet.

Evelisse breathed in.

Out.

Today.

Today she would tell her mother.

She slipped out of bed, bare feet padding across the marble floor. Marta had already set out her dress for the morning—a lovely pastel green with pearl buttons and soft cloud-lace at the sleeves. But Evelisse stood in front of the mirror, holding up the dress with a thoughtful frown.

"Do I look like a princess who tells very serious secrets in this?" she asked aloud.

Marta, entering with a silver brush, tilted her head. "You look like the most trustworthy sunflower to ever walk the garden."

Evelisse grinned. "That’s good. Because I have something important to say today. And mommy must believe me."

Marta paused, then nodded gently. "Then we shall braid your hair with the ribbon of clarity and your shoes with the laces of truth, Your Highness."

Evelisse squinted. "Is that real?"

"It’s royal handmaid poetry."

"Ohhhh. I like it."

She dressed without fuss, allowing Marta to twirl the final ribbon into her braid—blue and white, just like the day she was born. "For calm skies," Marta whispered.

Then Evelisse clutched the wooden box tight to her chest and whispered a quick prayer to the fluff gods that nobody would stop her in the hall.

Fluffy zipped into her sleeve and muttered, "If anyone asks what’s in the box, just say it’s secret squirrel business."

’That sounds more suspicious.’

"Then smile like a confused duckling."

And she did.

"Better."

They crossed the corridor in silence. Evelisse greeted every maid, guard, and noble they passed with perfect grace, small curtsies and soft good mornings. The guards at the western garden doors blinked in surprise as she approached.

"Your Highness!" the taller one, Sir Renly, bowed. "Out so early?"

"Yes, sirs," she said politely. "I wished to join Her Majesty in the gardens this morning. Might I inquire if she is already there?"

"She is, Princess," said the other, Sir Bastian, beaming at her. "Near the moon lily grove."

Evelisse tilted her head, curious. "The same moon lily that only blooms under starlight?"

Sir Renly blinked. "Yes, Your Highness. Though... the ones in the grove were blooming at dawn today. Very odd."

Fluffy hissed in her sleeve. "Ominous coincidence alert."

She pressed her lips into a firm smile. "Thank you, sirs. May your morning be full of sunshine and unburnt tea."

Sir Bastian laughed. "And yours as well, Your Highness."

She made her way down the garden path, clutching the box tighter with each step. The air smelled of dew and wild roses. The soft crunch of her shoes against gravel matched her heartbeat—steady, but unsure.

Seraphina sat beneath a blossom-draped arbor, sunlight dancing on her pale lavender robes. She was reading, lips moving faintly, but the moment Evelisse appeared, her eyes lifted—and softened.

"My love," she said, closing the book. "I was hoping you’d join me."

Evelisse approached slowly. "Mommy... may I speak with you?"

Seraphina’s smile faded, replaced by something deeper. She reached forward and drew Evelisse into her arms, sitting her beside her on the bench.

"Of course, darling. What is it?"

Evelisse placed the box on her lap like it was something sacred. Or dangerous.

"I... I found this. In my room. Last night. Hidden behind my toys."

Seraphina’s posture changed.

She didn’t panic. But she didn’t blink either.

Carefully, she opened the lid.

Her fingers stilled.

She looked at each marzipan figure—one by one.

Her gaze sharpened at the moon lily. The scroll. The handwriting.

Then she gently shut the lid.

"I was scared," Evelisse whispered. "I... I didn’t want you to think I was just being dramatic. Or making things up."

Seraphina didn’t speak right away.

Instead, she hugged Evelisse tightly.

Tighter than she had in a long time.

"Oh, my little star," she murmured. "You came to me. Thank you."

Evelisse blinked fast. "You’re not mad?"

"Never. I only regret the times in the past where we... dismissed your instincts. You see what others miss, Evelisse. And I’m proud you trusted me."

Fluffy poked out from Evelisse’s sleeve, invisible to her mother but smug enough to radiate satisfaction. "Told you. Magical sparkly wisdom creature, remember?"

’Don’t ruin it with gloating,’ she thought. ’I’m having a serious moment.’

Seraphina gently turned the box in her hands. "This flower... it’s not from our gardens. And the scroll... this isn’t any of the royal seals."

"I thought so too," Evelisse whispered. "Even the sweets—they’re too perfect. Like someone studied my brothers."

Seraphina’s eyes narrowed.

"I need to have this examined. Quietly."

She stood.

"Irelia."

A silver bell chimed near the archway. A tall woman with slate-grey robes appeared as if from shadow. Her hair was braided tight. Lady Irelia, Head of the Queen’s Personal Retinue, bowed low.

"You summoned, Your Majesty?"

Seraphina handed her the box. "I need a trace and origin search. Enchantment readings. And above all—silence."

"Shall I notify the King?"

"No." Seraphina’s voice was firm. "Not yet. I want confirmation first."

Irelia’s eyes flicked once to Evelisse, and for a moment, Evelisse swore she saw... warmth.

"As you wish, Your Majesty."

And she vanished again.

Like mist.

Evelisse sat very, very still.

"Did... did I do the right thing?"

Seraphina pulled her close again. "You did the bravest thing, Evelisse. I promise."

Fluffy sniffed in her hair. "Okay but can we still burn the marzipan just to be safe?"

’Fluff, no burning people-shaped pastries without royal approval.’

"You’re getting better at this ruling thing."

Seraphina sighed and leaned back against the bench, finally relaxing just a little. "You know what we need?"

Evelisse perked up. "Cookies?"

"Well... yes. But also fun. Distraction. I was going to wait until later to tell you, but..."

Evelisse leaned in.
