A Night of Desire-Chapter 81: This Can’t Be Your Illegitimate Son, Can It
Clara Grant looked at Cherie on the bed, a wave of pity washing over her. ’Cherie is so young, only five, and he’s already an orphan. How can fate be so cruel as to make him suffer the torment of illness on top of that?’
At that thought, Clara Grant’s eyes began to sting. She rushed over to the doctor and grabbed his sleeve. "Doctor, look at him, he’s so little, and he’s already suffered so much. So, please, I’m begging you. You have to find a way to cure him. Please!"
The doctor seemed startled by her sudden movement. He hesitated for a moment before speaking. "There is a way... it’s just the cost..."
"The cost doesn’t matter. No matter how much it is, I’ll figure something out. As long as you can cure him." Hearing that there was a way, Clara Grant’s eyes lit up.
Seeing her bright eyes filled with earnest hope, a flicker of hesitation crossed the doctor’s face. He lowered his gaze, avoiding her direct stare. Just as he was about to speak, a sharp, unfriendly female voice cut in from the doorway.
"Well, well, Clara Grant. And who might this be? You seem awfully desperate to save him."
At the sound of the voice, everyone in the room turned to look at the doorway.
When Clara Grant saw that it was Chloe Grant, her expression immediately soured. Ignoring her, she turned back to the doctor. "Doctor?" she prompted, signaling for him to continue their conversation.
The doctor pulled his gaze from the doorway and opened his mouth to speak, but Chloe Grant interjected again before he could.
"What’s the matter, Clara Grant? Afraid to tell me who this kid is? A guilty conscience, perhaps?" Chloe Grant said, her gaze drifting toward Cherie on the bed. "He couldn’t be your illegitimate son, could he?"
Before Clara Grant could respond, Skylar Hayes quickly stepped in to explain for her daughter. "Chloe, you’re mistaken. Of course this isn’t Clara’s child. He’s just a poor, parentless boy."
Chloe Grant acted as if she’d only just noticed her. She turned, a smirk playing on her lips. "Oh, Auntie, you’re here too?"
She called her "Auntie," but her tone was utterly devoid of respect.
"Auntie, your health has always been so delicate. If this weren’t Clara Grant’s illegitimate son—your own grandson—would you really have troubled yourself to come all this way?
"Besides, look how anxious you both are. Who would believe you’re not related to this child? Nobody gets this worked up over a complete stranger."
As Chloe Grant spoke, a triumphant smile spread across her face.
’It’s like fate itself is helping me. I was just thinking about how to ruin Clara Grant’s reputation, and now I keep stumbling upon one ’scandal’ after another.’
’First, there was her being a rich man’s kept woman, and now there’s an illegitimate son. If the first scandal wasn’t explosive enough, having a child out of wedlock will absolutely destroy Clara Grant’s reputation!’
’So, I don’t know if this kid is actually Clara’s, and I don’t care. All I need to do now is drag her name through the mud, and the bigger the scene, the better!’
’Clara Grant, you’re finished!’
At this thought, Chloe Grant felt a growing sense of triumph.
Clara Grant lowered her gaze and sighed inwardly before turning to face Chloe Grant.
’I wasn’t in the mood to argue with her, but if she’s going to be this aggressive, then she can’t blame me for what comes next.’
"Chloe Grant, don’t judge others by your own rotten standards. Just because you’re heartless toward strangers doesn’t mean everyone else is incapable of lending a hand."
While Clara was confronting Chloe Grant, the doctor beside her discreetly took out his phone. He opened WeChat, found a contact, typed two words—"Come up"—and hit send.
