A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 93: Wild Birds And The Coop
When they got back to the hut, they headed straight to the coop set up in the far corner of the garden. Serena quickly placed some straw, ash and sand into the coop before grabbing one of the wooden bowls to fill with water.
"Kiro, go fill this up with water." Serena instructed the eager cub.
The cub nodded its head, taking the small water bowl before he ran to the entrance of the hut where a large bucket of water sat for daily use. As he was filling up the bowl, Serena and Theo set to work releasing the birds.
They were of a flightless kind, so Theo didn’t bother clipping their wings before placing them into the coop. The birds squawked at them as they were dropped into the coop, quickly moving to get away from the two.
Once all three were safely inside the coop, Kiro came back and Serena took the water bowl from him. She then placed it inside the coop before taking the other bowl to fill with vegetable scraps.
The door of the coop was left open so the wild birds could come out, not that they did. However, Serena wasn’t too worried about that. They definitely needed time to adjust to this.
And hopefully things would go well.
Kiro was excited to see the wild birds, but Serena dragged the cub away, not wanting to overestimate the wild birds. They had enough excitement being chased down.
Instead they got lunch going. It was a simple meal of roasted bird and vegetables along with a boiled egg. While food was cooking, Serena took the brown root peels and long, orange squash seeds to the wild birds.
When she got to the garden, she found one of the birds cautiously wandering the garden, occasionally pecking at the ground. It walked though some of the garden beds, however, managed not to go after the growing plants.
Which Serena was glad for. It would’ve been a huge problem if the wild birds started eating the plants they were growing. She made her presence known to the bird, not wanting to accidentally scare it.
It let out a large squawk, scurrying away from her. Serena ignored it and headed to the coop where the other two wild birds were. She was careful as she removed the roof of the coop to put the food bowl inside.
One of the wild birds was in the nesting area, messing with the straw while the other was on the perching plank. Both let out noises as she appeared, so she quickly set down the bowl before putting the roof back on.
But not before the bird on the perching plank tried attacking her with its beak. Serena barely managed to get her hand away from the bird, putting the roof back on the coop.
She then headed back to the front of the hut to go enjoy lunch.

"Kiro, we’re going to go foraging together." Serena explained to the young cub as she put away their clean bowls.
Theo had just left after cleaning up to go find Jason while Serena was packing away their cookware and food bowls. Kiro was currently helping her, looking surprised at her words.
"Can’t I play today?" Kiro asked, handing her the last bowl.
Now it was Serena’s turn to be surprised at his question. Had he really gotten so close to the other cubs already? Was she overthinking her needing to be around him more?
She did indeed need to teach him about the world, but then again perhaps she was rushing it a bit. He was still quite young and had lots of time to still learn all the things she needed to teach him to survive in this world.
"You can go play I suppose..." Serena finally answered, deciding she wasn’t going to push him too hard today.
He already hunted today and helped with lunch. That seemed like those were good enough lessons for one day. She could take him foraging another time.
Kiro smiled at her words. "Okay! I’m going to go to the village center then. I’ll be back soon."
Serena nodded her head in understanding and the cub took off to the village center. She shook her head at the sight, moving to grab her basket.
Once it was strapped to her back, she headed to the village center too to look for Elder Samuel. She wanted to ask where the cotton plants were, if there were any around, so she could get some for Theo and herself.
She also needed to collect more of those long wooden strips to make more baskets. She was down to her last four and was going to need more for all the cotton and vegetables she needed.
From her estimates, she needed about five more baskets of long, orange squash and two baskets of purple roots to complete the plants’ part of the cold season preparation mission.
As for the meat one, they still needed quite a lot of meat and about five more furs to complete that part. Then the mission would be finished. Afterwards, it was just a matter of stocking up any extra food and making sure they had everything prepared.
She already tried searching for the cotton plants using the locating feature of the system, but it seemed they were in a location she hadn’t explored yet. Which made sense considering she’d never seen the plant before.
And with her not knowing what plant the brown strips for the baskets were from, she needed to ask Elder Samuel for that information too. Thus she went about the village in search of him.
She couldn’t find him in the village center so headed to the south side of the village. But he was not there either and she instead bumped into someone else.
Merinda.
Serena hadn’t seen the older rabbit beastwoman in a while, Merinda keeping her word to have her granddaughter Becky stay away from Kiro. The rabbit beastwoman too seemed surprised to bump into Serena.
"Becky’s not here." Merinda quickly stated, glancing over at Serena to check if Kiro was with her.
"It’s no worries." Serena gave her a small smile. "I’m actually looking for Elder Samuel to ask where I can find some cotton plants. Oh and the brown strips for baskets."
"I see... Well, Emma’s mate makes those brown strips. You can exchange them for food if you need some." Merinda explained. "As for where my mate is, I believe he headed out of the village some time ago. Went to get some things for the Asdea Festival."
Serena raised an eyebrow. "The Asdea Festival?"
