A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 85: An Idea For A City
Once they were finished with lunch, Theo went to work processing the extra meat Jason and him managed to hunt down while Serena went to check on Elder Samuel’s progress with the traps. She also wanted to do an overview of the village and surrounding areas to get an idea of the landscape.
Her plan for the village was to turn it into a multi-walled city. The inner-most part of the city would basically act as the castle and be the center for city control.
It would hold precious resources, extra food for trading and the cold season to reduce famine within the city and act as a safe haven for residents during raids.
The next part would protect housing for the villagers followed by a market and warehouse district for trading as well as workshops on the other side to aid with future development.
Additionally, they’d have a section for new residents and outsiders staying temporarily along the outer most part of the city to reduce the chance of the city being attacked from within.
Farmland would surround the fortress city with watch towers overlooking them. Originally, she wanted to make the farmland part of the city, but that could cause issues for expansion.
At least with them further out, there was space for more to build instead of cramping everything into one place. That could easily lead to issues such as disease or lead to massive fire disasters within the city if everything was on top of each other.
Speaking of which, she still needed to figure out a way to create a proper drainage system to prevent flooding within the city and for waste management.
Because right now, everyone was just using the forest and covering their waste afterwards. And that wouldn’t work in a more developed area. It was just a plague outbreak waiting to happen.
Not to mention, Serena was missing the convenience of bathrooms and wanted to introduce them here. Even if it was a primitive version of the one she was used too.
Adding to that, she also wanted some kind of water system going through the city. That way it would be easier for everyone to access water than traveling back and forth to the river. They could even create bathing areas like some ancient people did back on her home planet.
Canals similar to the ones the rabbit beastmen dug out for bathing could be used to get water to the farmlands much easily, but she wasn’t sure if that would work within the city.
She wanted to also make some kind of moat to add to the outer wall’s defense, but there was a problem with that idea too.
There was also a chance of beastmen, especially aquatic type beastmen, making use of them to get into parts of the city they weren’t meant to be in. She’d need to find a way to make it hard for them to make use of the water system she wanted to create.
Honestly, she was going to need that pen and paper for all these plans. It would be much easier to make a blueprint of how she wanted things to go and work from there.
It took a bit of searching, but after asking around, Serena finally found Elder Samuel by the east side of the perimeter walls checking out the rabbit beastmen’s progress on their traps lining the wall.
He was the first to spot Serena and immediately went over to her. "Serena! How are you?"
"I’m well thanks. What about you? Are the traps coming along nicely?" Serena asked, glancing over at the work being done.
The three rabbit beastmen from yesterday were currently placing a combination of long grass, leaves and sticks over the set trap, trying to hide it from view. Serena had to admit they sure knew how to hide something.
"I’m well too and things are going great here. We’re finishing up our last traps and will be letting everyone know to keep their eyes out for wood carving." Elder Samuel replied, pointing out the small marking on the wall above the trap. "Is there something you need?"
Serena turned her attention back to Elder Samuel and said, "Well, if you don’t mind, I’d like to get a tour of the village and surrounding areas."
"Is it for..." Elder Samuel paused, not wanting others to hear outright.
But Serena understood what he was asking and nodded her head. "It is."
Since the project was still under a planning phase, the Council wanted to keep it under wraps as much as possible. Especially with Jason still lingering around. They didn’t want him giving his tribe any ideas.
The smaller parts would be done during the cold season and then when the rainy season came, they’d have a group chart a route to the Mer City.
Once charted they would send an envoy to get the Forest City to get negotiations going for them with the Horse Clans. Construction would also begin for the farmlands.
They would likely need to go further into the forest because the current space was limited and they could only develop so much without causing overcrowding.
Serena then added, "Of course, you don’t need to do it yourself. This is mostly so you know that I’m wondering about and not trying to cause any alarm." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"No no. It’s fine. I can show you around." Elder Samuel stated. "It would be good for me to take a look at things too. Make sure everything is in order."
"Well then I won’t argue with you." Serena responded.
Elder Samuel smiled at her words before he said, "Let me just finish up here and then we can do the tour."
Serena nodded her head in understanding, stepping to the side, so as not to get in the way. Elder Samuel soon went back to checking on how the trap disguise was coming along.
"What are you touring the village for?" Liz suddenly asked, making Serena glance over at her arm.
She had to admit it was somewhat strange having the system constantly attached to her arm, watching her every move. No, unnerving was the right word for this.
"I just want to check out something." Serena replied vaguely, not really wanting to give the system an idea of her plans.
It could probably guess from everything she was doing like buying city planning books and having conversations with the Council. But there was a massive part of her that was used to keeping things to herself.
Less they get used against her.
"You know you can’t hide anything from me." Liz stated.
"I know..." Serena muttered back.
But she had some massive trust issues and wasn’t just going to spill everything to Liz. If it could watch her every move then it could figure out what she was doing on its own.
"That being said, are you always going to attach yourself to my arm?" Serena asked. "Can’t you disappear or something once in a while? Surely this is an invasion of privacy."
Perhaps she should make use of that mute feature. She could mute Liz when she didn’t need the system and then unmute it when she did need it to do something. Granted that probably wouldn’t go down well with Li.
It seemed to greatly distest being muted. She’d likely never hear the end of it if she tried that move again.
"Well I can fly too if I shift into a bird, but that takes a lot of effort. Oh and I can enter your subspace and stay there until you call for me, but you haven’t given me permission to enter it." Liz stated, making Serena gape at its words.
"Did it never cross your mind to tell me that..." Serena grumbled before shaking her head. "You know what nevermind... You can access the subspace. Just don’t cause any trouble or mess with my things. I’ll call you when I need you."
Or better yet we can have our conversations in my subspace. Serena thought to herself. That would lower the chances of someone overhearing me speak to Liz and think I’m going insane.
Not that she was really stable mentally, but that was besides the point. It was better for her to keep up appearances and have everyone think she was fine. No need to have them questioning her mind.
It was better that way...
"Well, someone had to mute me." Liz retorted before disappearing with a flash, not giving Serena a chance to strangle it.
She would when she got back to her subspace. But for now, she would focus on what she came here to do. Thankfully, Elder Samuel was about done and after saying goodbye to the rabbit beastmen and thanking them for their hard work, he headed over to Serena.
When he got to her, he said, "Shall we get started with touring the village and surroundings?"
Serena nodded her head. "Yes please. Let’s get this started."
