Chapter 40: A SENSE OF COMFORT AND PROTECTION

The next thing she did was something that shocked them all. It was beyond their imagination, even for Khaos, he didn't think Zuri would resolve to such an extreme method.

"What are you going to do now?" Zuri glanced at Elder Erik, who was struggling for his life. His feet flailed in the air, searching for some footing, but there was none. His efforts stopped when his body went still. "I am the murderer and now all of you are the witnesses." Zuri looked around her, making sure to look at those beasts one by one, though it was hard when they were hiding in the shadows.

In the end, Zuri's eyes returned to Khaos'. The alpha looked at her intently, but it was hard to tell what he was thinking when his expression was utterly blank.

It was the quietness that emphasized the tension in the air. A man was dead, but none of them cared about the poor elder.

Even the gamma, who was usually very talkative, didn't dare to make a peep, as he stared back and forth between his alpha and Zuri.

"What are you going to do now?" Zuri finally broke the silence. "I can't outrun any of you. I can't fight even one of your warriors. If you still want to kill me, my only request is... make it quick." Zuri's voice was cold and unfeeling when she said the last word. "I hate to be in pain."

She had been in so much pain for the last few years, she didn't even remember when she was not in pain or confusion. It was tiring.

This life was tiring.

She might be crazy. She believed she was crazy since people around her kept telling her that, but she wanted this to end.

There was a time when she felt dreadful to even wake up in the morning and go on with her life.

"You have not yet told me what favor you want from me," Khaos reminded her about the favor that he owed her for helping him with the ship trading. He gave her a way out.

Yet, Zuri shook her head. "No. I will not use that."

There was this subtle frown between Khaos' brows. He could see that she didn't want to be saved, but beyond her stubbornness and cold façade, he could see her pain.

Like he said, she was hurt.

"Come with me," Khaos said, he turned around and then mindlinked his warriors and Caiden to take care of the problem there.

Zuri didn't question where Khaos would take her, she simply followed him, where he took her to his palace. The previous king had gifted him this palace when he was born.

On first observation, Zuri noticed there was no maid here, all of them were warriors from his pack with his insignia on every door handle.

And another thing that she realized was; he took her straight to his bedroom. This shocked her, but even if she was given an option to back out, she wouldn't go for it.

Deep down, without her realizing it, she had developed this attachment toward him. It was hard not to.

When all the people in your life had starved her, you would naturally cling to the first person who fed you, even though it was just crumbs.

Meanwhile, Khaos watched how Zuri entered his bedroom without any hesitation and when he closed the door and trapped her between his arms with her back against the wall, she looked him in the eyes, there was no trace of fear.

"Do you even know the meaning of this?"

"It can ruin my reputation if the words get out."

"And you are okay with that?"

Zuri paused for a while, not because she was hesitant of her answer, but his gray eyes were hypnotizing. "Yes." She then tiptoed and wrapped her arms around his neck before kissing

him.

Khaos let her do what she wanted. He didn't push her away or stop her, but he didn't reciprocate the kiss either. He just waited until she was done.

"That will be the second time you caught me off guard with a kiss." Khaos narrowed his eyes when Zuri licked her lips. She pressed her back against the wall again, but his clothes were still in her clutch. "I really don't understand you."

Zuri agreed with him, she didn't understand herself either. She let her impulses and the voices in her head control her, but she had no regrets.

"I want you."

Khaos chuckled. He caressed her cheek and ran his thumb over her lower lip. "You are so bold. Are you suggesting having an affair with me?"

Zuri couldn't answer that. She felt too much, but nothing at the same time.

"Or, do you only want me because you don't like the life that you live right now?"

That was it. He put into words the feeling that she couldn't even explain. This man only knew her for such a short period of time, but it almost felt like he could read her like an open book.

It was an incredible feeling when someone could say something that you couldn't even voice.

She hated her life.

"You only live once, if you don't like it, do something about it."

Zuri gritted her teeth. "I should thank the heavens that we only live once, because I don't think I can do it a second time." She tiptoed and was about to kiss him again, but this time, Khaos pulled back.

There was a flash of hurt in her eyes, a tear streamed down her cheek and when Zuri lowered her head, feeling defeated, Chaos pulled her against his chest and hugged her. He patted her

back lightly.

"This feels better than a kiss, right?" Khaos said.

His scent overwhelmed Zuri and his warmth blanketed her.

There was one thing that she didn't realize she had been longing for a long time; a sense of

comfort and protection.
