70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 343: Mother-Daughter Dispute
"How can I not get involved? I’m your mom. If I don’t watch out for you, what if you get tricked by someone?" Qian Ying was also a bit upset.
Speaking of getting tricked, Xu Xue’s eyes turned red. Although she secretly dealt with that man several times, he was on guard against her, and she hadn’t avenged herself yet. Her mom was stabbing her right in the heart.
"I told you to leave it alone, so leave it alone." Xu Xue said loudly, her eyes red. She’s only seventeen now; even waiting ten more years to get married wouldn’t be too late. She knows many people in her past life married late, and there were plenty who didn’t marry at all.
She has her own money now, so she doesn’t need to worry about those things at all.
Besides, she really likes Huo Qingze. Even though he rejected her, she can’t let go.
"Fine, just think it over yourself," startled by Xu Xue’s red eyes, Qian Ying softened her tone a bit without realizing.
Her daughter is far more assertive than they are; they can’t completely control Xu Xue. Forcing their daughter to go on blind dates just wouldn’t work.
They’re counting on their daughter to care for her younger brother more in the future, so they can’t afford to strain the relationship.
Xu Mumu paused the hand washing the little brat’s face. Xu Xue was just seventeen, and already being pushed into marriage. Oh my, if she hadn’t found someone herself, would her mom start pestering her too?
The little brat noticed his sister paused and wriggled free from Xu Mumu’s grip, playing joyfully with the water in the basin. Fortunately, the little one was only wearing a vest, so it was easy to just change him when he got wet.
Xu Mumu was a bit helpless. Letting him play for a while longer, she then wiped his hands dry with a cloth and took the water to water the garden.
The little brat still wanted to play outside, but Xu Mumu stopped him.
"Aah." The little brat looked at his sister in confusion. He wasn’t hot anymore and wanted to continue playing outside. Home wasn’t as fun as outside.
The team had quite a few children, though they were looked after by older kids. Seeing children his size made the little guy very excited.
"We can’t go, okay? How about we eat some fruit?" Xu Mumu took out a tangerine, given to her by an old lady in the team. The tangerine’s skin was yellow and looked thin, suggesting the insides were sweet.
"Ah." The little guy was excited and wanted to grab the fruit from his sister’s hand, but he was too short to reach it.
"Come on, let’s go inside, and I’ll peel it for you," Xu Mumu said, leading the little guy by the hand. He became obedient at the prospect of food and let Xu Mumu lead him to the main room.
Xu Mumu peeled the tangerine, its fragrance catching the little one’s attention. She smiled gently; the little guy was indeed a little glutton.
After splitting it in half and giving him a share, the little guy, having had tangerines before, took half, immediately eating a segment. The sweet taste made the little guy squint his eyes in delight.
"Is it good?" Xu Mumu asked with a grin, putting a segment in her own mouth. It was indeed very sweet.
"Aah," the little guy’s eyes sparkled, clearly satisfied with the tangerine. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Xu Mumu pinched the little guy’s cheek, finding him adorable when he innocently ate his food nicely.
As the siblings were eating, Xu He and the others returned, carrying a thick piece of fir wood. Fir has high density and is quite hard; it doesn’t rot easily and can last for many years.
Some beams in the house needed replacing. Apart from this fir, they cut several others, planning to replace them all at once.
The Red River Team is backed by a mountain, and the timber resources on the mountain are quite abundant.
After placing the wood in the courtyard, the brothers headed back up the mountain; the remaining logs still needed to be brought down.
Once Xu He and the others left, the little guy hurriedly ran over to sit on the log and eat his tangerine, looking utterly delighted.
Xu Mumu was amused and left him alone. Let him play to his heart’s content since his clothes were already dirty anyway.
Xu Xue came out of her room, still with red eyes, and took a basin to the river to do laundry.
After several days of rain, the river level had risen significantly. Xu Mumu had noticed children catching fish in the river when she took her little brother to play there.
Not long after Xu Xue left, Qian Ying was soothing Kangkang, who was crying. Kangkang’s body was quite weak, and even his cries sounded feeble.
Xu Mumu didn’t bother to check on him and just sat by the courtyard watching her silly little brother eat his tangerine while riding the fir log like a horse.
Soon, Xu Jiaojiao and the others returned. They had collected quite a bit, though some were old or spoiled, much to the children’s regret.
Then Xu He and the others finished cutting the wood, bringing back four fir logs. The first was the largest, with the rest a bit smaller.
Lunch comprised stored cured meats, fried with garlic sprouts, which was very flavorful.
In the afternoon, while teaching some children to read, several team kids lingered outside the courtyard. Xu Mumu glanced out but then returned her gaze. She knew exactly what those people were up to.
Teaching the kids at home was enough for her. The team had a primary school; she couldn’t be bothered with the others.
The kids noticed too and didn’t care. The eldest sister was theirs, and they wouldn’t let anyone compete for her attention.
In fact, when envious looks were cast their way, the kids straightened up and glared back.
As Xu Mumu taught the kids to read, Xu He and his brother went up to the roof to work. Both brothers were skilled workers, and changing the beams didn’t require anyone else’s help.
By the evening, the beams had been replaced, and some new straw was added to the roof. After all, it wouldn’t be long until the autumn harvest, bringing new wheat straw and hay. The current stores were from last year, so they weren’t reluctant to use them.
Seeing the brothers toil all afternoon, Xu Mumu felt quite calm. After all, it needed to be done eventually, and this way, the new beams could be used for many more years.
The beams might’ve been replaced, but due to the rains a few days ago, quite a bit of mud had slid into the drainage ditch at the back, needing to be cleared out. Otherwise, water accumulation could lead to leakage inside, and the earthen walls couldn’t withstand water soaking.
The next day, the brothers were back at it like oxen, digging out the mud from the drainage ditch and cleaning it up.
Seeing their diligence reminded Xu Mumu of her dad. If Xu Hai were home, he’d surely be slacking off, claiming he wasn’t feeling well and needed rest.
There was plenty of work for the two strong hands at home, so meals were quite hearty. Luckily, they didn’t have to go to work for the next few days.
