Chapter 261: Halt

The appearance of monocles turned the battlefield dead silent. All the spells entered the numerous monocles and disappeared within them, without showing any of their effects.

All eyes turned towards the giant monocle smiling in the sky, sending creeps to anyone who looked at it.

Aegon narrowed his eyes as he stood up straight, as two people stepped out of the giant monocle. One was obviously his girlfriend, which made his gaze soften instantly.

But the instant he saw the other smiling face, his mood soured. The old man was still grinning even as he looked at the devastation caused by their battles.

Amon adjusted his monocle and spoke, "My, my. I come a few minutes late and you already started the party. Why didn’t you wait for me?"

He looked around and said, "I would have worked as a host. Might even broadcast it to the whole Empire. Do you know how much I would have earned from that? Not to mention the entertainment! Ahh! The loss!"

Liliana snapped her fingers, as red lilies blossomed on the monocles surrounding her as they slowly crumbled away into grey dust. In the same timespan, two red lilies formed on Roland’s and Selena’s heads as their bodies turned stiff.

She raised her head and asked, "Are you going to interfere in my family matters?"

Amon smiled, "You’re doing colossal damage to your surroundings, Miss Liliana. Not to mention, your actions will cause the fall of many human champions."

"Does it matter?" Liliana cocked her head sideways. "I can repair all the damage and then provide you artefacts equivalent to these champions. My Obsidian Goliath alone is worth more than them."

"Now, now, you know as well as I do that machines can’t compete with humans," Amon said.

"True." Liliana scoffed. "Machines won’t betray you."

"Oh, they can," Amon’s smile grew wider. "Care to look behind you?"

Liliana frowned and turned around, only to see the Obsidian Goliath raising one of its arms and putting it on its right eye, as if trying to wear a monocle.

"I told you. This is meaningless," Amon sighed. "I respect you, Miss Liliana. Every single one of your inventions has brought victories to humanity. But I can’t let you fight like this."

His eyes narrowed slightly. "Please back off."

Aegon blinked in surprise when Amon casually took control over the Goliath, but hurriedly came out of his reverie and turned towards the monocle man.

"We didn’t start the fight, though," he shouted. "They came to kill us. Don’t tell me we can’t even defend ourselves?" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Oh? Is that so?" Amon raised an eyebrow. "Interesting development."

As the silence between them stretched on, the clouds drifted away rapidly and the Twilight seemed to finally come to an end. The sky grew brighter, as if someone had reversed the time of the world.

All the monocles burned into crisps along with the barrier holding the Songsword siblings. They all staggered back towards the ground, shaking in fear as they looked up at their saviour.

Bright golden hair danced in the air as two pools of sun-like eyes looked down at the world. The man wore casual clothes, but even then his majesty couldn’t be concealed.

A sigh escaped his lips as he turned towards Aegon. "A day can’t pass without you giving me some trouble."

Aegon threw his hands back, "Not my fault this time. They came to kill me."

Samuel frowned upon hearing that. He turned towards Amon and said, "Back off. I’ll handle this from here."

"As you command, Your Majesty," Amon bowed elegantly and slowly came down from the skies.

The moment their feet touched the ground, Elara ran towards Aegon and gave him a hug. But they didn’t stay like that for long even though they wanted to forget the whole world and simply enjoy each other’s warmth.

Aegon raised his head towards Samuel and found him looking far away at something or perhaps someone. He stretched his hand and, right before their baffled eyes, he pulled out a half-dead Reinar out of thin air.

Reinar had already lost consciousness, and his corpse-like state showed the reason. Clothes torn, mixed with blood and dirt. Body filled with heavy wounds enough to kill a person ten times, yet he somehow held on to his dear life.

Samuel sighed again and put his hand on Reinar’s head. A golden glow emitted from his body and in a matter of seconds, he was healed completely.

At least, his outer wounds were healed.

Samuel waved his hand as his unconscious body fell down near the other members of the Songsword Family. They looked worriedly at him, then at their sides where the dome of shadows still reigned supreme.

Samuel gave a glance to Aegon, who understood the meaning. Reluctantly, he told Hecte to withdraw since the task was done. With the strongest man here in person, nothing could go wrong.

’Especially since I’m the nepo baby here and also have the moral advantage. Still, what will he do?’

Aegon was curious.

As the dome shimmered away, it revealed the dire situation inside. Inside a deep crater lay two unconscious bodies while a third old man defended against a bulging mass of shadows who looked... well, unharmed.

’Wait, how will I even know if the shadows are injured?’ He shook his head and turned towards Miguel. "You can stop them as well. How many remain anyway?"

Miguel was silent for a moment before saying, "Sixty-seven."

’Tsk! Shitty number.’ Aegon clicked his tongue.

"Now, the only one who remains is..." Samuel turned to finish his sentence and noticed a stream of purple glowing closer to him.

A sigh escaped his mouth again, as he wondered why he couldn’t live one day without any trouble.

Before long, a figure clad in purple lightning stopped right before him, carrying a charred body like a sack of potatoes.

Xiu stared at Samuel for a second before throwing Marvin’s body at him. "He’s still alive if you want to heal him."

"Interesting!" Amon smiled. "You managed to free yourself from my dear monocles."

"It’s easy," Xiu shrugged, as lightning retreated inside her body and she returned to her normal appearance. "I was your student once, Sir Goblin."

Samuel ignored their talk and healed Marvin to a greater degree. Then, he handed him back and declared,

"The imperial court will see through this matter. Now, every person involved can leave."
