My Wife Is The Author?
Chapter 23: ̷H̷̷i̷̷m̷
Charles looked at the first spell over and over again. The longer he looked, the wider his smile became.
His initial reason for hunting this boss was simply to try his hand at getting some more physical strength.
He had acquired Primal Leverage, which was useful, but only if he was physically stronger than whatever he was fighting.
If I use a mixture of my Editor’s Authority, I can definitely still make use of the skill. Though I would’ve preferred if the passive had the opposite effect, helping me fight against things that were stronger than me.
He considered summoning the beast right there, but decided against it.
Since it was an Elite Spell, he shouldn’t be able to use it. However, Author’s Mana Circulation allowed him to do this, as long as he had sufficient mana.
As an avid reader of the novel, Charles knew that summoning spells required a lot of mana.
It was for this reason that he decided to wait.
He also contemplated harvesting the gorilla’s fur and other items of use; however, he decided against it.
The more time he spent down here in the tower, the more he thought about Charlotte and what was happening on the top floor.
He currently had two items from the list: King Slime Gel and Queen Bee’s Honey.
I have to climb the tower as fast as I can... I can’t keep wasting time.
...
On the 90th floor...
After fifteen more floor climbs, Charles had remained unscathed.
The more he thought about Charlotte, the less time he wished to spend on each floor.
He ran into no more of the items on the list, but he didn’t mind.
Now, he was at the door to the 90th floor. From here onwards, the boss rush would begin.
He would fight bosses on each floor and hopefully be able to find the remaining items that Charlotte needed.
I’m coming, Charlotte, just wait...
Charles opened the door to the 90th floor and stepped through, ready, holding his dragon scale dagger in his hand.
However, once he entered, his body relaxed and he looked around.
The colosseum room had nothing going on inside it.
There was no special terrain, or even any signs of a boss.
The room was entirely empty.
...
This shouldn’t be right. Is this some sort of problem?
Charles stepped towards the centre of the room and started looking around even more, just to be sure.
This confirmed that there was definitely nothing inside.
Hmm, could it have been her? Did she use more of her powers to help me?
If so, I hope it didn’t take too much out of her...
Facing zero danger on the 90th floor, Charles made his way to the 91st floor.
It was the same problem there. It was completely unchanged emptiness. Not just on that floor, but on all of the floors that followed it.
By the time Charles reached the 99th floor, he expected the same thing. Emptiness, with nothing going on inside it.
However, when he opened the door, he found a familiar figure.
Curled up at the centre of the empty colosseum was a great dragon with scales blue like sapphire. It had black spikes running down its spine and a tail that could knock down entire buildings.
It was the dragon that Charles had met before. The first boss he had ever faced in the Elurion Tower.
He spoke quietly, but his words echoed across the room.
"Caarthanax?"
The blue dragon stirred slightly, looking up. He breathed sharply through his nose, creating a small gust of wind.
Charles wasn’t intimidated by the dragon. The duo seemed to have an unspoken agreement, allowing him to pass whenever he needed to.
Though there was a chance that the dragon had changed his mind after the tower reset.
Charles stepped close to the dragon, making sure that he remained alert and ready to use the necessary skills.
Caarthanax was a Grade Six Sage, but it was nothing that Charles hadn’t dealt with before.
He was just about to pass the dragon and continue through to the 100th floor, where his wife should have been waiting for him.
Then, Caarthanax spoke.
"He is up there."
Charles’ body froze. He suddenly felt like he couldn’t move at all, even if he wanted to.
It was like the laws of the room had changed.
"Who...?" he barely managed to croak.
Caarthanax remained silent for a few seconds before eventually answering.
"Him."
The singular word was enough to strike deep fear into Charles’ entire being.
After hearing this word, no more time could be wasted.
He bolted for the door, running as fast as he could.
He felt the Author’s Aura passive taking effect, making him faster and stronger, which meant that Charlotte was nearby.
But the better question was: who was she with?
Charles slammed the door to the 100th floor open and immediately stepped inside.
He expected chaos, but was instead met with pure peace and quiet.
The room was as he had left it before.
The bathtub was there, as well as the stove and the chest containing the items he had gathered before.
There on the bed next to his own was Charlotte. The woman was fast asleep, unharmed and beautiful.
Charles almost relaxed. Almost...
There was a figure sitting next to Charlotte’s bed, seated on a chair. In his lap was Charlotte’s notebook, which he casually flipped through.
The man was tall, even whilst sitting. He wore an all-black modern suit, as though he were going to a funeral. His long hair was red, and so were his eyes.
He was flawlessly handsome, and when he looked up at Charles, he wore an angelic expression on his face. One that suggested he could never do anything wrong in his life.
After spotting Charles, he closed the notebook and wrapped his fingers together, leaning forward slightly.
Then, he smiled.
"Hello, you must be my sister’s husband."
