Chapter 450 - 266: Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiend and the Black Assassin (Part 2)
Anglo laughed loudly as he approached, clapping Fang Zhen on the shoulder. He no longer looked worried like he had in the conference room; instead, he seemed utterly exhilarated.
It wasn’t just him; even the perpetually serious West had a smile on his face.
Fang Zhen nodded and said, "It was all thanks to the alchemical equipment. I’m not the impressive one—it’s the Alchemist I know, Sains."
"You’re too modest," Alexander said, also extremely pleased. "The main credit this time is yours. Also, if you get the chance, you must invite Mr. Sains to be a guest in our Lanxi City. We will certainly treat him with the highest honors."
"He can’t come in person, but I might be able to bring you some of his writings," Fang Zhen said.
’I just wonder if you’ll be able to understand them,’ he thought.
Just then, the roars of strange beasts echoed from the distance. It sounded like some massive monsters were heading their way.
Fang Zhen frowned, and Alexander’s expression changed beside him.
It seemed tonight was destined to be a sleepless night.
...
The smoke of war spread across the battlefield. In the flickering light of the flames, the city looked all the more tragic and heroic. The entire scene was suffused with the tension of a warzone.
The night sky pressed down on the city walls like heavy silk. Stained by the smoke, the bright moonlight seemed unable to penetrate the swirling haze, leaving only a gloomy pall. Only a few faint rays broke through to illuminate the people on the battlefield.
Nearly three hours had passed since Fang Zhen had set the aberrations ablaze. Within those three hours, the creatures seemed endless. Wave after wave of Abnormal Ghosts and other aberrations had continuously assaulted the city.
It seemed the people from the Eternal Night Council didn’t consider these aberrations to be of much value.
The Abnormal Ghosts were simply cannon fodder. The Eternal Night Council had no real intention of taking the city; they just wanted to wear down the living forces of the Whig Society and the other defenders.
Below Lanxi City, the bodies of aberrations had piled up over three meters high, making the originally tall city walls seem comparatively shorter.
Some aberrations, like the Ghost-faced Spiders, could climb straight up the city walls. People had already been wounded and killed atop the ramparts.
Fang Zhen was currently resting within the crenellations on the city wall. He closed his eyes to regulate his breathing, using the Mage’s Meditation Technique he had obtained in the Nameless World.
He had already upgraded this Meditation Technique to the third stage. Under the current circumstances, his stamina and Spiritual Power were rapidly recovering.
Fang Zhen had never fought in a siege like this before. But since his strength far surpassed others, he dared to act as a free agent.
He acted as a mobile firefighter, rushing to wherever the pressure of the assault was greatest.
If any aberrations made it onto the wall, he would immediately go and strike them down.
The aberrations, however, seemed to pay no mind to their casualties.
But Fang Zhen noticed something strange. The Abnormal Ghosts below the wall were constantly dragging the bodies of the dead aberrations back, though he didn’t know for what purpose.
After several hours of fighting, the soldiers on the wall had changed their attitude toward Fang Zhen, becoming much more supportive and admiring.
The soldiers had seen Fang Zhen’s actions with their own eyes. He went wherever the danger was greatest. Both his tangible contributions and the morale boost he provided had greatly encouraged them.
Without realizing it, Fang Zhen had established his authority in the hearts of the soldiers.
Just then, a series of shocked cries suddenly erupted from the soldiers on the wall, as if something major had happened.
Fang Zhen’s eyes snapped open. He grabbed the long spear beside him and, in a few strides, emerged from the crenellations onto the top of the wall.
Atop the wall, Fang Zhen gazed into the distance.
The sight made him freeze for a moment.
In the distance, enormous Poisonous Cannon Fiends were approaching. Not just one, but three of them, were slowly making their way over.
Fang Zhen had seen a Poisonous Cannon Fiend before, but the one he had encountered was only slightly larger than a regular Abnormal Ghost.
But these Poisonous Cannon Fiends were each over four meters tall. Their entire bodies were a nauseating green, and they stood significantly taller than a single-story building.
The bodies of the Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends were like elephants, and they had six arm-like legs. These legs, like pillars, propelled them forward, each heavy step making the earth RUMBLE.
Each of the three Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends had a huge poison sac on its back with a cannon-like nozzle. The nozzle’s diameter looked to be almost a meter.
Behind the Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends, green pus and blood could be seen constantly circulating between the poison sacs and their bodies.
Horrifyingly, as these walking Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends advanced, they were chewing on something. A closer look revealed they were the corpses of Abnormal Ghosts—or to be more precise, the brains of Abnormal Ghosts.
The living Abnormal Ghosts were actually taking their companions’ bodies back, slicing open the skulls with their Bone Sabers and continuously feeding the brains to the Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends to nourish them.
And the Giant Poisonous Cannon Fiends ate as they walked.
As they consumed the brains of the Abnormal Ghosts, their bodies seemed to mutate further, growing even larger, and their venom seemed to become even more potent.
Extraordinary aberrations.
Or evolved aberrations.
On the city wall, after realizing this, Fang Zhen knew he could not wait any longer.
