My Childhood Friend Turned Yandere in the Apocalypse
Chapter 199: Ch : Task 10 complete
I made grammar, punctuation, and word-usage edits while preserving your tone and narrative style.
"Hmm, how fascinating. It seems like my powers have no effect on you. No, it’s not that. Your body is actively filtering my powers out of your system, making it appear as though you are unaffected. How are you doing this? Would you care to share with me?"
Mr. H asked with a fascinated look as he walked closer to Rin.
But Rin instantly went on alert and assumed a defensive stance in case Mr. H did something sudden, like attacking him.
[Don’t worry, Rookie. Mr. H is a respected member of the system’s workforce. You can call him a ’senior’ of yours. Of course, he is not as senior as I am, nor as successful. That’s why he’s stuck doing grunt work.]
The system sounded proud as it made that announcement. But Rin did not pay much attention beyond the word "senior."
When he looked up from the system, he finally noticed how close Mr. H was. The boss was standing only a few steps away from him and looking at the air in front of Rin with a fascinated expression.
"That system... I see. So you are a fellow employee of mine. It’s a pleasure to meet you. And I do apologize for this sudden welcome. I did not realize you were a junior colleague of mine."
Mr. H’s attitude changed in an instant. He went from threatening to calm and friendly.
Rin did not lower his guard, but the tension finally started to leave his body. Mr. H decided to take advantage of that. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
He snapped his fingers, and a chair appeared beside Rin.
"Please sit while we talk... or stand. The choice is yours. I promise I won’t do anything further to either you or your companions."
Mr. H promised as he sat down in a chair of his own.
Rin had no intention of sitting, but he had a feeling it would be better if he did. So despite his hesitation, he sat down and waited for Mr. H to speak.
But when it became clear that Mr. H had no intention of continuing the conversation, Rin had no choice but to start it himself.
"So, you’re a senior employee and work for the system? What exactly do you do?"
[What a rude question, Rookie. You are not supposed to ask employees what they do for a living. Luckily, Mr. H is an easy-going person. Someone else would have taken offense. Even I wouldn’t have been able to defend you.]
Mr. H let out a smile that unnerved Rin. The system had told him that Mr. H was easy-going, but it seemed as though he had already taken offense to Rin’s question.
"That’s a rather personal question. But I don’t mind answering it. Hmm, let’s just say I do all kinds of odd jobs for the system. If something needs to be done, the system comes to me. For example, becoming a boss in a task."
Mr. H sounded sincere, but Rin did not trust his words completely.
Instead, he focused on his next question. There was a lot he needed to ask, but he did not know how much time he had left.
"What is the system? Do you know the people who are using it? Why did they cause the apocalypse? And how do we stop it?"
Rin asked the questions quickly, doubting that anyone would catch all of them. So he was not expecting answers to everything.
But Mr. H was not an ordinary person. He answered each question one by one.
"You want to know what the system is? I think you already know. It’s a creature from another world that landed on Earth, and humans decided to exploit it for their greed. They wanted more power and influence, so they tried to study the creature and use its abilities."
Mr. H folded his hands once he finished speaking before continuing. This time, his eyes looked much sharper, which unsettled Rin.
"Also, it is rather rude of you to assume I had anything to do with it. I was born after the apocalypse by the system’s will to carry out its tasks. You should ask those humans why they caused this calamity. As for how you stop it... well, who knows? Even the humans who started it cannot stop it. The only way I know is to fulfill the wish of our creator—the system’s main body."
Finally, Rin had answers. But they were not the answers he wanted.
Mr. H noticed his frustration and let out a sigh.
"I understand that none of this was what you wanted to hear. But it is the truth, and whether you choose to believe it or not is not my concern. I will take my leave now. As a gift to my fellow employee, I will allow your party to leave this task and consider it completed."
Rin felt his breath catch in his throat when he heard those words. He had... forgotten all about the others while questioning Mr. H.
Mr. H stood up, and Rin did the same. The chairs disappeared, and Mr. H started to walk away. But he turned back to look at Rin one last time.
"Your companions... I would advise against getting too close to them. Most of them do not belong in this world for long, and the system has its own uses for them. Don’t try to fight it. I can already tell that you won’t win."
With those words, Mr. H disappeared, and Rin finally felt his legs move again.
The strange feeling of oppression he had felt while Mr. H was around faded away as well, and the others started moving again.
"W-What happened? We were fighting someone..."
"My body feels stiff. It’s as if I haven’t moved it in a long time..."
"Rin, are you alright? What happened? And where is the boss?"
Rin shook his head, which was his way of telling them that he did not know either.
He knew he could trust his people, but he had no intention of telling anyone about his conversation with Mr. H.
"I already dealt with the boss, so this task should be finished as well."
[Task Ten Completed.]
[Congratulations. You have completed the first ten tasks. The global server merge will now begin.]
[From this point onward, the tasks you receive will no longer be region-locked. Please do your best to survive.]
