I am the Clone of a Death Row Inmate
Chapter 336 - 276: The Relics of Lin Hua’s Legend
The moment Su Ze’s voice fell, the old man’s cloudy eyes closed and his head slumped forward. A moment later, he was snoring softly.
’Did he just fall asleep?’
Su Ze looked at Chen Suifeng, completely bewildered.
Chen Suifeng sighed. "Mr. Ke doesn’t have much life force left. Keeping his body asleep slows the drain on his vitality. Unless it’s a matter of great importance, he normally communicates only through his Spiritual Power."
"I just told Mr. Ke about the alien invasion, which is why he awoke from his slumber."
’His body is asleep, but his mind is awake?’
’Is that even possible?’
Su Ze was skeptical. He glanced at Mr. Ke, who seemed to be fast asleep.
Suddenly, an aged voice resounded in the minds of both Su Ze and Chen Suifeng. "Unfortunately, I am not a Spiritual-type Legendary. Otherwise, I might have been able to help you remove the foreign object in your soul. As it is, I am powerless."
’So it really is Spiritual Transmission...’ Su Ze was startled at first, then inevitably disappointed. Not even a Legendary could remove the foreign object from his soul.
As for Spiritual-type Legendaries, Su Ze had never heard of any. At the very least, none of Lin Hua Country’s three Legendaries were of that type.
For now, he pushed aside the thought of the foreign object in his soul and focused on the alien invasion.
Chen Suifeng had already relayed their findings to Mr. Ke from beginning to end, but it was clear Mr. Ke hadn’t believed him right away. That was why, when Su Ze was under the pressure of his Spiritual Power, he had also taken the opportunity to "test" Su Ze for lies.
Su Ze wondered how much Mr. Ke believed now, after the "test."
After that, Mr. Ke sent no more transmissions to Su Ze. Chen Suifeng, however, stood with his hands folded before him and his body slightly bowed, nodding from time to time as if he were being reprimanded by a superior.
Clearly, Mr. Ke was still communicating with Chen Suifeng, but he had excluded Su Ze. Su Ze couldn’t tell if it was because Mr. Ke didn’t trust him enough, or if it was for his own protection—a belief that someone of his power level would be in too much danger meddling in such affairs.
Su Ze was happy for the break. He never wanted to deal with this alien bullshit in the first place. If it hadn’t involved him personally, he would have dumped it on Chen Suifeng and washed his hands of the whole affair.
Bored, Su Ze began to look around. Ke Xiuyuan’s home was far from luxurious, radiating simplicity. The living room contained only a table, two chairs, a television, and a bookcase.
Su Ze’s gaze was drawn to the bookcase. It held no books, but was instead filled with photo albums, a few scattered photographs, and all sorts of medals.
The old photographs were all group shots. The topmost one was a large group photo of several dozen people, all wearing the earliest style of the Lin Hua Army uniform, their faces beaming with smiles full of hope and aspiration.
Among the sea of unfamiliar faces, Su Ze found someone he recognized: a young man standing in the center of the front row. Though his features were ordinary, his presence was anything but. His imposing figure was like a greatsword—heavy, yet sharp. His calm eyes seemed to hide a wildfire, tenacious and blazing.
This man was none other than the founder of Lin Hua Country, the legendary powerhouse of his generation, Lin Hua!
Su Ze’s gaze shifted from Lin Hua, scanning the heroic soldiers behind him one by one. He soon locked onto an inconspicuous young man in the back.
The young man bore a strong resemblance to Mr. Ke, especially around the eyes. Their features matched perfectly. It was, without a doubt, a young Mr. Ke.
In the photograph, Ke Xiuyuan was unremarkable among the crowd. He was positioned in a corner of the back row, looking like a mere underling.
Back then, no one could have possibly imagined he would become the successor to Lin Hua’s Legend.
In this photo, besides Lin Hua’s Legend, the most eye-catching person was a female soldier standing beside him. Though she was in uniform, it couldn’t conceal her unparalleled beauty. Surrounded by male soldiers, she stood out like a rose blooming among green leaves.
Aside from that first photograph, the other group shots on the shelf also featured both Lin Hua’s Legend and Ke Xiuyuan. However, the number of people in the photos dwindled with each one. The Ke Xiuyuan in the pictures gradually lost his youthful awkwardness, growing more mature and composed...
And his position in the photos gradually moved from the back row toward the front.
Clearly, as the War of Evolution neared its end, the battles grew fiercer, and more and more soldiers were sacrificed. Many of the people from that first group photo never had the chance to be in another one.
Ke Xiuyuan survived, and his position in the Lin Hua Army rose higher and higher.
In the final group photo, there were only two people left: Lin Hua’s Legend and Ke Xiuyuan!
By then, the smiles were gone from their faces, replaced by a tranquility as still as stagnant water.
Though there were only a few photos, they seemed to lay out a tragic and heroic war epic before Su Ze’s eyes.
Su Ze sighed softly and turned his attention to the medals in the bookcase.
The old man had a life of glory and countless achievements. The small bookcase could never hold all of his medals, so the upper shelves displayed only the few he valued most.
As for the other medals, they were all stuffed into the cabinet on the bottom half of the bookcase.
The medals the old man cherished most were not finely crafted. On the contrary, they were old and worn—some were covered in scratches, some were rusted, and others were damaged. They looked like they were from a bygone era.
Su Ze bent down slightly, and only then did he see the bottommost shelf. There, a few old medals were arranged around a single token, like stars orbiting the moon.
The token seemed to defy the passage of time, remaining as bright as new.
The front of the metal token was engraved with a single leaf. The leaf was ovate-triangular in shape, with serrated edges.
This token was the insignia of the Lin Hua Army. And Su Ze happened to have an identical one.
