Chapter 1054: Doomed Mission? - The Source of Meg’s Confidence!

Has she bitten more than she could chew?

That was the first question that surfaced in Meg’s mind as she stood in front of the ancient, arched doors of the Forest Vault.

His Majesty had assigned her a simple Mission.

Retrieve Herpo the Foul’s Horcrux hidden in the Forest Vault.

Simple, yes.

Only in the wording, though.

Not only would Morning Mist have to retrieve the Horcrux from the Forest Vault, but she would also have to do it with a 12th Floor Contestant watching over the Vault.

She didn’t know who this person was.

Was this person one of the Agents of Quasi Cipher Pol, who seemed to be carrying out assassinations of White Serpent Pirates under the banner of Death Marks issued by the organization?

Was this person a Contestant from the infamous Flowers of Doom?

Or was this person from the only remaining organization of the bunch — the Hyperspace Raiders?

Meg did not know.

Even His Majesty didn’t know.

What she did know, however, was the fact that whoever was holing up inside the Forest Vault was waiting for His Majesty to enter.

She knew that this person would be as strong as a Top-level 11th Floor Contestant, despite the Order of Immortal Lotus’ Seal on them, because of the current Harry Potter timeline’s advance toward Pillar status.

She knew that this person would have an Item or Artifact to counter His Majesty’s luck, which meant this person’s luck would be unnaturally high, as the only way to counter someone’s luck was through luck.

She also knew one more fact.

As she stood here... she, Morning Mist, a Top-level 8th Floor Contestant... a fallen Contestant, had absolutely no chance of surviving against the horror behind the Forest Vault’s doors.

Perhaps, she wouldn’t even see the 12th Floor Contestant act.

Perhaps, in the blink of an eye, it would be all over.

So, Meg asked herself the same question again.

Had she really bitten off more than she could chew this time around by asking His Majesty to give her such a task as her Floor Ascension Mission?!

Perhaps... she had.

Meg remembered her exact words.

She had not demanded to let her retrieve the Horcrux.

She had demanded to let her end one of the remaining Contestants guarding a Cursed Vault.

Is that why His Majesty designed the Mission Objective as such?

But if Captain knew that she was too weak to be given a Mission to kill a sealed 12th Floor Contestant, what’s the difference between assigning a Mission to kill the Contestant and assigning a Mission to retrieve the Horcrux?

Because, at the end of the day, she would have to confront the Contestant anyway.

Because, ultimately, she wouldn’t be able to complete her Mission as long as the Contestant lived, right?

Or... could she?!

Meg stared at the arched doors and squinted her eyes.

There must be a reason behind His Majesty’s choice of words for the Mission Objective.

Yes, it was she who had asked for a doomed Mission, and if he had given her exactly that Mission, then she couldn’t have blamed anyone but herself. But... he didn’t. He gave her a Mission that seemed equally doomed, but he gave it to her anyway.

Which meant...

His Majesty has full confidence that I can complete this Mission, Meg observed.

And, with that observation, all her doubts, nervousness, and questions melted away, a smile blooming on her cherry-red lips.

That’s all that mattered to her.

If he believed in her to move the world, then Meg knew she could move the world, even if she thought herself incapable of it.

Taking confidence in Kai’s confidence, Meg stepped forward.

A lone gust of wind slithered its way through the Forbidden Forest and lifted her long, curly red hair, her dark brown eyes glowing darker against the arched door’s suffused light.

She was wearing her favorite yellow-hooded gown, with the Jolly Roger of the White Serpent Pirates — a skull with a serpent slithering in and out of its eyeless sockets and open mouth — printed on the shoulder, pulsating with a green-white hue.

This robe was not Lilith.

It was not even an Item or Artifact.

It was just her way to remind herself who she had been once, before falling out of Temple’s grace... before His Majesty had given her a new hope.

Unlike the other White Serpent Pirates, Meg didn’t find the need to hide away from her past.

She had been a Priestess of Temple of Hastur.

She had been a 13th Floor Contestant.

She had failed her Main Mission and had fallen to the 1st Floor, instead of Chaos outright obliterating her existence... only because the Old One had intervened.

She had kept receiving Temple’s protection because of that mere fact.

Even if most of her memories related to the Temple and her Priestess-past were sealed, that much was clear and true.

His Majesty had never hated her for that.

He had also never hated her for still believing in Hastur’s benevolence, despite not praying to Him anymore.

Moreover, even if His Majesty carried some apprehension toward the King in Yellow, he had never let that apprehension become a wall between them.

And it was all because she didn’t need to bury her past to prove her loyalty toward His Majesty.

As she pushed the Vault’s doors open, Meg remembered the first time she had met him.

She also remembered the time when she had accepted him over Hastur, renouncing her Priestess’ status.

It was then that she had broken herself off from her past.

It was then that she had embarked on the journey of His Majesty’s conquest.

She had been the first.

And she would be there at the end.

She also knew that many in the Primordial Tower would see her as a foot soldier, given His Majesty’s vast reach and accomplishments.

But Meg...

She didn’t mind that.

Because, as long as it came to serving His Majesty...

... Meg would be more than happy to even call herself a mere... attendant.
