It was already the fourth quarter, yet everything felt like it had reset.
The scoreboard still showed a tie, but the momentum had slightly shifted in favor of the Shizi Dogs. Kaiâs sudden barrage of three-pointers had left everyoneâfans, players, and even the commentatorsâspeechless.
"Kai Guo, ladies and gentlemen!" Ginaâs voice crackled over the speakers, struggling to contain her excitement. "Where did this come from? I mean, we all knew he was good, but three-pointers? This was supposed to be his weakness!"
David chimed in with a laugh. "Right? This guy couldnât hit a three to save his life a few games ago. And now heâs nailing them with perfect form. Itâs like he unlocked a cheat code."
On the court, Max stared at Kai, his brows furrowed. He knew now. This wasnât just a flukeâKai had been practicing.
Max knew it because three-pointers had been his weakness, too, something he had been trying to fix for months. But now Kai had beaten him to it, and the sting of that realization cut deep. He clenched his fists, his jaw tightening.
Kaiâs development wasnât something that happened overnight, though. This was the result of months of trainingâlearning, adjusting, failing, and finally mastering the technique.
Kai had trimmed down on his open practices, keeping it low-key, but behind the scenes, heâd been perfecting his shot. He had learned from Andy, watching how muscle memory could turn a weakness into a strength with enough repetition. And thatâs what he did. Over and over, he practiced shooting until his muscles remembered the exact movements needed to sink the ball into the hoop.
A new skill had emerged, one that was now taking court by storm.
[New skill acquired!]
[Three-pointer legend: You have a 75% chance of making shots from the three-point line.]
So far, Kai has been running at 100%.
But he wasnât satisfied yetâhe wanted to test it further. With the fourth quarter just starting, Kai found himself with the ball again, standing just beyond the three-point line. The crowdâs murmurs grew louder as they realized what he was about to do.
Ginaâs voice cut through the noise. "Wait, is he going for it again?"
Without hesitation, Kai lifted off the ground, his eyes locked on the basket. The ball left his fingertips, and the world seemed to slow down as it soared through the air.
71-69.
The crowd screamed, and the scoreboard reflected the widening gap.
"Unbelievable!" David shouted into the mic. "Kai Guo with another three-pointer! This kid is on fire!"
"Coach Guanyu canât be happy about this," Gina added. "Heâs seeing a weakness in the Knightsâ defense, and heâs exploiting it mercilessly."
"Wait!" Coach Guanyu called from the sideline, his voice frantic as the fourth quarter rolled in. But the damage had already been done.
With each successful shot, Kaiâs teammates felt the energy surge through them. They could feel victory within reach, their confidence growing with every play. Continue your adventure at novelbuddy
Yuze, despite his injury, pushed harder than ever. Jinping, already fouled four times, wasnât backing down either, making sure every pass and every screen counted. And Andy, while still not shooting well, was playing well as a playmaker, feeding Kai whenever the opportunity arose.
They were more inspired than ever. The Knights, on the other hand, were starting to feel the pressure of the last quarter.
But Max wasnât done. Not yet.
74-68.
After watching Kai drain another three, something inside Max snapped. He wasnât about to let Kai upstage him, not like this. This was the onion kid that barely made it to the Shizi Dogs!
He dribbled up the court, his eyes blazing with focus.
Max called for a screen, evading Jinpingâs defense. He moved quickly, sidestepping Andy and lining himself up at the three-point line. With a sharp, clean motion, he pulled up for the shot.
Swish.
It was a perfect response. Max, too, had been practicing his three-point shots.
"Oh, this is getting intense!" Gina gasped as Maxâs shot went in. "Now Max is hitting threes? Itâs a battle of the guards turned sharpshooters!"
The back-and-forth began. The Dogs werenât backing down, and neither were the Knights. Every time one team scored, the other was right there to answer. The tension grew with every possession, each team pushing themselves to the limit, fighting tooth and nail for every point.
Max drove to the basket, only to be met by Yuzeâs towering defense. But he wasnât deterred. He passed the ball to Yutong, who sank a mid-range jumper.
80-78.
On the next play, Kai was quick to respond. He cut through the defense with lightning speed, dishing the ball to Jinping, who drove into the paint. With defenders collapsing on him, Jinping flicked it back to Kai, standing just behind the three-point line.
83-78.
The Shizi Dogs were up again, but the Knights were relentless. Max came down the court, his eyes locked on the basket. He knew he had to make something happen. His legs were burning, but he refused to give in. He launched another three-pointer, and once again, it found the bottom of the net.
83-81.
Davidâs voice boomed over the arena. "This is unbelievable! Both teams are leaving everything out there!"
The scoreboard showed the closeness of the game, the two teams neck and neck as the seconds ticked away. Each side was pushing themselves to the edge, digging deep into reserves of energy they didnât even know they had.
But then, in the midst of the chaos, it happened.
Yuze, who had been fighting through the pain of his injury for the entire game, made a hard cut toward the basket. He planted his foot, but something gave way.
His face twisted in pain, and he collapsed to the floor, clutching his leg.
The court went silent for a good few seconds.
Ginaâs voice cracked. "Oh no⊠Yuze is down."
"This isnât the first time that it has happened. This incident also happened with the Giants, and as I remember, Yuze wasnât able to get up at that momentâleading to him missing the game after it."
The referees blew the whistle, halting the game as the Shizi Dogs and Knights both turned their attention to their fallen opponent. Kai rushed over, his heart pounding.
They still werenât at the finish line.
However, just before the medic team could get closer to Yuze, he raised his hand with a deep frown, raising his hand up.
"Heâs up again!" David exclaimed. "Looks like itâs not as serious as I had imagined."
"Now, Yuze will shoot two points for the Shizi Dogs!"
