Back to the 70s: My Childhood Sweetheart Spoils Me Rotten
Chapter 1000 - 1002: This Is True Toiling
Looking at the prepared packages, Gong Ruini wanted to say that since she’s studying in Beijing, there’s no need to prepare so many things.
Although Gong Ruini hadn’t attended university or lived in a dorm, she had toured the campus when Zhao Xuran and Gong Ruwen were in college.
Bunk beds aside, the important thing is that the suitcase is only so big. Gong Ruini thought, fortunately, the family is in Beijing; otherwise, with such limited space, where would she fit clothes for all seasons?
Gong Ruini worried about how her dorm mates would perceive her. Would they think she’s wealthy and exclude her?
Or perhaps, they might think she’s an easily persuaded young girl with a lot of stuff, trying to trick things out of her.
Gong Ruwen looked at Aunt Zhan and mom, constantly preparing this and that, genuinely worried for his little sister.
Gong Ruini was anxious, signaling her brother to speak up.
Gong Ruwen shook his head at her. When mom and the others are so excited, he dared not interrupt for fear of facing consequences later.
Sigh, you can’t rely on your big brother at crucial times.
"Mom, Aunt Cai, you’ve prepared so much stuff. How can Ni Zi use all of it? Moreover, it might give her dorm mates a bad impression." Zhao Xu, who had lived in dorms, knew all about it.
They say guys are generous and won’t fuss over small matters, but aren’t there fewer nit-picky guys?
Guys might cause a fuss over minor issues, not to mention girls.
Cai Meina, a college graduate and a teacher for years, wasn’t involved in logistics, but she heard about conflicts among girls.
She hadn’t considered it before, but now she did. How could she leave her daughter with such a hidden danger?
"Bring less. If you need anything, let me know, and I’ll bring it to you."
Following Cai Meina’s advice, "Live in the dorm during your first year, and apply to live outside in your second year."
Having studied and worked at Jing University, Cai Meina had strong opinions about the unchanged dorms over the years.
"Those dorms are so old. Going to the bathroom requires a long walk."
"Getting hot water means going far away."
At that moment, Gong Ruwen looked up at the sky; he didn’t want to remind mom that he was also studying at Jing University and hadn’t graduated yet. How did she forget this?
Sigh, he’s clearly the son, but Gong Ruwen felt like crying.
"Alright, Xiao Wen, you’re her brother; visit your sister often." Cai Meina didn’t want to appear at her daughter’s dorm door, making it awkward for her students.
Cai Meina was keen on avoiding suspicion, "Ni Zi, if you need anything, come see me."
Gong Ruini agreed; she had no objections to Cai Meina’s suggestion. If she gets along well with her dorm mates, living at the school would be useful for networking.
"Alright, let’s go. If we don’t leave now, we won’t make it." Gong Tao, waiting in the car for a while, impatiently went inside to urge them.
"Rush, rush, rush, always rushing." Cai Meina didn’t understand how someone previously reluctant to let their daughter go now seemed eager to send her off quickly.
"Why bring so much luggage? She’ll come home every week and exchange for clean clothes." Gong Tao complained, seeing the big packages.
"Ni Zi, if you’re busy studying, don’t wash clothes; bring them home for the washing machine." Her hands were not meant for chores.
Gong Ruini would never consider bringing dirty laundry home, fearing the summer clothes would stink after a week. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
She imagined her reputation spreading around campus and shuddered at the thought.
Gong Ruwen looked to the sky, wondering if these were still the same parents strict with them, who once urged him to learn laundry properly before school.
Now, as graduation approaches, parents are urging him to learn cooking in case he ends up in a remote area post-graduation.
Why is it different for the sister? Gong Ruwen thought even if the parents overlooked this, Aunt Zhan might disapprove.
"If you’re embarrassed about bringing a big bag home, give it to mom." Gong Tao thought it was showy.
Having mom take clothes home daily would surely cause rumors. "I can wash; summer clothes are easy." Gong Ruini said she could handle it like everyone else.
"Alright then." Gong Tao sighed, wanting to say more but stopped by Cai Meina, helplessly carrying luggage.
"Don’t be frugal at school; eat whatever you like and ignore others’ opinions."
"If anyone bullies you, find your brother." Gong Tao, driving, continuously reminded her.
Did she look easily bullied? She had never attended college either?
Moving from Northeast to Beijing, speaking the dialect, she smoothly settled down.
Gong Tao and family truly worried; before, they felt reassured with Zhao Guangran by her side. If someone bullied her, Guang Ran wouldn’t hesitate.
But now, with Zhao Guangran in the United States and Ni Zi alone at Jing University, how could they not worry?
Working at a supermarket in the United States, Zhao Guangran suddenly sneezed several times, startling everyone.
"Are you okay?" asked a concerned young white colleague who got along with Zhao Guangran.
Zhao Guangran waved, "I’m fine. Let’s keep working."
Looking at the many goods to move, Zhao Guangran sighed. Before coming here, relatives talked about how wonderful the United States was, making him envious.
After arriving, he realized the U.S. was great only for wealthy people.
Relatives arranged his accommodation but afterwards didn’t care much. Thankfully, he came prepared not to rely on them, avoiding disappointment.
His relatives were decent, knowing he needed to earn money and improve his English, they helped him find this job. After a month, although tiring, his speaking improved.
Luckily Ni Zi didn’t come to the United States; he doubted she could endure. Even if she didn’t complain to family, if her brother knew, he’d face consequences.
Zhao Guangran missed life back home, where he lived well, ate well, had fun, and attended college proudly with friends. Here, he was just a poor kid.
A penniless Asian.
Trying not to overthink, Zhao Guangran kept reminding himself, enduring hardships lead to success; otherwise, he wouldn’t know how to persevere.
