Arcane: The Gods Want Me to Pick a Route
Chapter 244: Jax and Aatrox
"Hold on, Yi. Let me hide my aura first."
"Why?"
On the broad avenue of Zaun's new city, the wide street was packed with tourists from all over the world, along with enforcers hurrying back and forth.
When they reached a residential block with a sign that read "Flora and Fauna Community," Logan suddenly lifted a hand, patted Yi on the shoulder, and spoke.
Yi stopped and looked at Logan curiously.
Logan said, "I want to know whether Jax knows who I am."
He really was curious about that. No matter how you looked at it, he was a pretty major figure on Valoran by now, right? Hell, his reputation had spread across Runeterra itself. So the question was, did Jax know about him? Had he seen his portraits and photographs?
After hearing that, Yi looked a little speechless.
He stared at Logan for a long moment before finally saying, "I truly can't understand how someone with such a childish personality managed to become this strong."
For a human to become powerful, they always had to give something up.
A battle fanatic like Jax had given up his whole life to pursue the limits of the Martial Path.
As for Yi, while he was not as old as Jax, in the meditative world, one flower held one world, and one second could pass like a year. On top of that, he carried the crushing burden of his past. After finally learning to let go of it, Yi had undergone a complete transformation.
Now, even the head of the Kinkou Order, in Yi's view, was far beneath him in the path of meditation.
"All right, then. Stay behind me," Yi said, not objecting.
The two of them went upstairs. By the time they reached the fourth floor, the hallway was crowded with people. Logan and Yi squeezed through the crowd and made their way to the door at the far left end.
The moment they reached it, before Yi could even raise a hand to knock, the door swung open.
The purple-skinned man inside had removed his cloak and was bare-chested. Wearing that strange helmet, he spoke with open delight in his voice. "Yi, you already finished what you came here to do?"
Seeing Jax like that, Yi was briefly taken aback, then gave a helpless smile and shook his head. "Not yet. But I do have some free time right now..."
"That works! No need to waste words. Let's go find a place and start right now!" Jax was overjoyed. He reached out to grab Yi by the arm.
But a figure stepped out from beside Yi.
Yi also chose that moment to say, "I'm not the only one who came, Jax."
Jax's hand froze in midair, then slowly withdrew. Looking at Logan, the corner of his mouth lifted as he tested the waters. "Zaun's Logan?"
"Well, I'll be damned. Someone like you actually knows who I am." Logan looked Jax up and down, studying his body.
So this was what a purple brick wall looked like.
A guy like Jax was a real block of a man.
A literal block.
Jayce was already huge, but Jayce's size came with a good-looking build, broad shoulders and a narrow waist, basically a perfect V-shaped frame. Jax, on the other hand, looked like a refrigerator standing there.
"You're not like other city lords, kings, or nobles. I know everything you've done across Runeterra over the past year. That business in the north... what a shame. If I could have, I'd have liked to join in myself." Jax's voice was low and booming, and when he brought up the events in the north, his tone was full of regret.
Yi smiled from the side and said, "I sensed a little of what happened in the north too, but it was too far away. I only caught traces of the power waves. It would have been clearer if I'd gone into meditation, but even then, I couldn't grasp the full details."
"From the way you're talking, Jax, are you saying Logan was the one who led the war of the gods in the north?"
"He didn't tell you?"
"I only just met Logan myself," Yi replied.
Watching Jax and Yi start chatting like old friends, Logan said irritably, "How about we go inside and talk?"
Jax stepped aside, and Logan and Yi entered the room.
The room was not large, only about three hundred square feet, but it had everything it needed. The color scheme was warm and inviting. There was a tiny kitchen off to one side, just a few square feet, with an alchemical gas stove inside. Next to it was a bathroom of similar size. Other than that, the place held a double bed, a hextech purifier, a wardrobe, a table, and the rest of the necessities.
Zaun was not short on money these days, and in some ways, the environment and facilities of the new city were actually better than old Zaun.
Of course, that was only in terms of living conditions. If you were talking about bustle and prosperity, then Black Lane was still the busiest and liveliest part of the city by far.
Logan and Yi found places to sit down, while Jax kicked off his slippers and sat cross-legged on the bed. The moment he did, he looked even more like a cube.
If you ignored the pointed head, he really did look like a living Rubik's Cube, a purple one at that.
"All right then, Logan. What did you come to see me for?"
Logan looked at Jax and smiled. "Didn't you understand what Yi just said?"
The eyes beneath Jax's helmet dimmed, then lit again, as though he were narrowing them.
Logan continued, "When you spar with Yi, count me in. Something that fun obviously needs me there too."
Jax laughed and nodded. "Count you in? No problem. But Logan, do you know what kind of spar Yi and I are planning?"
The instant he heard that, Logan's smile stiffened.
Great. So both of you are looking down on me now, huh?
"It's precisely because I know how you and Yi plan to spar that I have to join," Logan said, shifting his posture and speaking in earnest.
With the help of the Spirit Blossom space, Logan really had been getting stronger nonstop, but because his power had grown too quickly, his current condition was a bit like Lux's.
That is, he had tremendous power, but no way to fully bring it out.
The two men in front of him were the exact opposite kind of powerhouse. Whether it was Yi or Jax, both were the type who could take one hundred percent of their power and push it into one hundred twenty percent effectiveness or more.
Technique and martial skill were the outlet for strength.
And Logan's technique was not good enough. If he threw out a hundred points of force, then getting ninety percent of that effect was already considered pretty good.
A game was the easiest comparison. A max-level character using a low-level skill would obviously deal nowhere near the damage of a high-level skill, because the skill values were completely different.
And the wind blade arts Logan currently wielded, no matter how remarkable they were, still belonged to the realm of mortals and the merely extraordinary. That sword art could not reach the level of a demigod.
So Logan urgently needed to improve his technique.
And right now, Jax and Yi would be the best teachers he could possibly ask for.
"Then are you ready?" Jax climbed down from the bed, pulled his cloak back on, and picked up the long staff wrapped in cloth strips from beside the headboard.
"Jax, has anyone ever told you that you're unbelievably impatient?" Yi said with an amused smile.
Logan rolled his shoulders and flexed his hands. "I'm ready."
"Then lead the way," Jax said in a low voice.
Logan grinned.
The Freljord, Hall of the Nine.
Lissandra was dreamwalking, moving along the edge between two realms, probing for the malice unknown beings were projecting toward Runeterra.
And strangely, she felt no burden at all.
Instead, she calmly sensed those noisy, chaotic voices.
After thinking it over, Lissandra realized that the reason she could remain this calm now, without feeling worn down, really was because of Logan.
That man's appearance had lifted a great many burdens from her shoulders. Volibear had vanished without a trace, the alliance of northern ancient gods had been shattered, and White, Rilfen, and Jie had managed to subdue two more demigods over this stretch of time.
Only the Iron Boar was still holding out. After all, he was also an old powerhouse, weaker than Volibear, but not by all that much. The Three Demigods working together could maintain the upper hand against him, but it would still take a good while to force him to submit.
So Lissandra really did not have much left to worry about.
At that thought, she even found herself feeling a faint spark of happiness, enough to draw a slight smile to her lips.
But while she was smiling, she suddenly sensed a familiar energy.
Her expression turned strange as she withdrew from her dreamwalking state.
Her awareness returned to the material realm of Runeterra. Sitting on her Ice Throne, she narrowed her pale eyes and looked toward the frozen mountain above that suppressed the Hall of the Nine.
Then her expression became even stranger.
Because that familiar energy was already very close.
In fact, Lissandra could practically smell him already.
Sure enough, a few seconds later, she heard his voice.
"Lissandra, find me a place. I want to spar with some people!"
The moment his voice echoed across the skies over the Frostguard Citadel, Lissandra's subordinates all looked shocked.
Who the hell was that bold? Who dared call the queen by name like that?
But then, under the command of Frostguard leader Raelna Ula, who waved a hand and shouted reassurance, the clan members quickly calmed down.
"Don't panic! It's Lord Logan, one of our allies!"
Back on Lissandra's side, she looked over at Fura Brokenmark, who was standing guard beside her, and frowned on her lovely pale face as she said coldly, "What are you smiling at?"
Fura instantly straightened up and wiped the smile from her face. "My mistake. Please forgive me, my lady."
"..."
Seeing Fura admit fault so quickly and shamelessly, Lissandra felt even more speechless.
Helpless, she waved a hand and said, "Undo the seal. Let him in."
"Yes." Fura stepped back, but even then there was still a smile lingering on her face.
Her lady really was becoming more and more human lately.
Fura thought that was a good thing.
The lofty, untouchable Lissandra had been fine too, because her power was beyond question. With her there, nothing could go wrong for the Frostguard. But when her lady showed a little humanity, it became much easier and more natural for the rest of them to get along with her.
More than that, Fura could even joke around with her now.
Was that overstepping? Fura did not know. But Lady Lissandra would sometimes talk to her now, and their relationship no longer felt like that of ruler and subordinate alone. The Frostguard Citadel had become more united because of it.
Lissandra's change had influenced the Iceborn of the Frostguard.
Fura opened the seal.
Then she saw Logan, carrying the Darkin greatsword on his back.
And what left her speechless was that the sword had sprouted two blood-red tendrils, which kept lashing out at the big purple man beside Logan.
As for the other middle-aged man, refined in appearance, gentle in temperament, and so thin that Fura wondered whether he even ate meals at all, he simply smiled warmly and nodded to her in greeting.
Logan greeted Fura as well.
"Go on in. My lady is waiting for you," Fura said to Logan.
Logan nodded, then pressed a hand against Aatrox and said helplessly, "Enough already, Aatrox. Can you calm down? You and Jax have been arguing the whole way here. If I'd known it would be like this, I never would've gone back for you in the first place."
"Listen to me, Logan. Use me to cut him down! I'll lend you every last bit of my power! Kill him, and from then on I'll obey whatever you say!" Aatrox roared, his tone thick with fury toward Jax.
Jax snorted, casually slapping aside the dense red energy before saying, "Give it a rest, exalted Ascended general. These days, you're nothing more than a weapon. You need someone else's help just to attack me, so I'm really curious how you still manage to be this arrogant."
"Back then, that mouth of yours never said a single decent thing, and nobody dared say much because no one could beat you. But now? Now, as far as I'm concerned, you're just weak."
There was open satisfaction in Jax's voice.
And of course he was satisfied.
Icathia and ancient Shurima had been bitter enemies, and Jax was Icathian. During their war, he had personally killed an Ascended. Of course, if that Ascended had happened to be Aatrox, Jax never would have gone near him.
He was a battle fanatic, yes, but not an idiot. Fight Aatrox head-on?
Yeah, right.
At his peak as an Ascended, Aatrox's martial might had stood at the very top of Shurima. Setaka, the Ascended Queen, had been praised as the most perfect and mightiest of all Ascended, but even she could not guarantee she would beat Aatrox.
That was Aatrox in his prime, a true god.
Take the war against the Void, for example. Jax had not fought in that war, because the instant Icathia summoned the Void, Icathia was doomed. But he had watched that war unfold.
Aatrox alone had cut down more than a dozen gigantic Void creatures, monsters whose limbs were like mountain ranges and whose heads pierced the clouds.
Jax admitted that against such a creature, he could at most handle one, maybe two, and after that he would need time to recover from his injuries.
But Aatrox? In that battle, he only grew fiercer the longer he fought. Other than Setaka, he had been the most important figure in that war.
But now?
Now he had become a sword.
A sword that only knew how to curse.
More importantly, he had bent the knee to a human.
"Bastard! Bastard! Saijax, you dare look down on me! How dare you! How dare you, I swear, I swear! I will, I will tear you apart! I'll crush your bones! I'll drink your blood! I'll gouge out your ey, mmph mmph! Lmmphgan, let, mmph, go!"
"All right, Aatrox. There'll be a time when I need you in a minute," Logan said, helplessly clamping his hand over Aatrox's mouth.
Hearing that, Aatrox's anger subsided a fair bit.
And then, with Fura leading the way, the group entered the Hall of the Nine.
Jax's expression grew serious as he sensed the freezing aura around him, and he quickly detected the presence of a powerful being ahead.
That presence was nearly on the level of the Setaka he had once seen.
The realization shocked him.
Yi felt the same way. In Ionia, the most powerful being he had ever encountered, other than the spirit of Ionia itself, was Karma.
And Karma and the being before him were not even comparable.
Was this powerful being one of Logan's companions?
Yi was stunned.
Just how many gods were following at Logan's side?
"You suddenly came looking for me. What do you want? I recall you're about to be married. Let me say this first, I won't be attending your wedding. Sejuani is more than enough to represent the north and offer its blessing."
The cold voice came from ahead.
It was so cold that simply hearing it made it feel as if shards of ice were stabbing into the ears.
Logan kept walking forward, with Jax and Yi following behind him.
The funny thing was that Aatrox, who normally cursed like a man possessed, had suddenly gone silent.
There were very few people Aatrox actually feared. Even if Ornn himself stood before him, Aatrox would still dare curse him out, because while he might not be able to beat Ornn, Ornn could not really do much to him either.
Besides, in his prime, Aatrox had at least possessed the power to fight Ornn.
But the witch was different.
The dark True Ice she controlled could even seal away the Void. Sealing a sword like him in his current state would be effortless.
Insult Lissandra?
No chance. Seriously, no chance.
And if Logan knew what Aatrox was thinking right now, he would probably laugh.
Aatrox had taunted plenty of champions, but with Lissandra... there really did not seem to be any lines between them. Sure, part of that was probably because Aatrox was designed for top lane and mostly taunted other tops, but that was not the whole explanation.
Maybe Riot had just never written one.
Or maybe Aatrox truly did not dare.
"I wasn't planning to invite you to the wedding anyway. I came this time because I need a favor."
By the time Logan reached the center of the vast hall, enormous ice pillars filled with seals surrounded the area. At the very center, atop dozens of layered ice steps, Lissandra sat there with a cold expression on her face.
When Logan saw that expression, he clicked his tongue.
Back to the ice-face look again. They'd been getting along just fine before this.
"Go ahead. What do you want me to do?" Lissandra asked indifferently.
"Make me a place. We're going to spar," Logan said.
Lissandra fell silent.
Then she took a deep breath and said, "That's why you came all the way here? You're about to get married, and you ran to me for this?"
"It won't affect anything. We won't need much time," Logan replied.
"..."
Lissandra looked at Yi, then at Jax.
She was a little annoyed that Logan kept ordering her around, especially for something this trivial, but the irritation faded just as quickly.
God.
Logan really was a demigod magnet, an absolute walking heartthrob.
How many days had it even been? And he'd already gone and roped in two more ridiculously powerful humans?
And both of them were strong.
At that thought, Lissandra felt very tired.
She had lived for over ten thousand years, and the number of demigod-level friends she had was exactly one, Ornn. And even he only dealt with her because their interests aligned. Otherwise, Ornn would not bother with her at all.
As for the rest, most of them were her enemies.
Seriously, how the hell did Logan do it?
Comparisons really did kill.
"Hmph."
With a cold snort, Lissandra rose from her throne and lightly pressed one pale hand downward.
Ice began appearing around Logan, Yi, and Jax.
Then it quickly sealed around the three of them.
In moments, it formed an enclosed space built entirely from ice.
Jax let out a breath. The hot air had barely left his mouth before it crystallized into icy grains and fell to the ground.
Yi rubbed his hands and touched his cheek, feeling the cold immediately.
Then they heard the witch's voice.
"Fight in there. But if the three of you all go all out and this ice chamber breaks, I won't rebuild it for you."
Jax frowned beneath his helmet and muttered, "So we can't really enjoy ourselves?"
Yi also looked a little helpless.
Logan, meanwhile, grinned. "It's fine. She's just saying that. If it really breaks, she'll remake it. She's just a tsundere."
Outside, Lissandra, who had just been about to leave and find a place to watch the fight, suddenly froze in place.
Beside her, Fura covered her mouth and snickered.
In the next moment, Fura's hand froze to her face, and panic filled her eyes as she heard Lissandra's voice.
"You like laughing, do you?"
"Let's see how much you laugh now."
"For the next week, you're staying like this. Don't even think about eating."
Fura wanted to cry, but no tears came.
